: Clutch disc question
Klasick68 03-26-2002, 04:22 PM Ok, I am too cheap (read broke ) to buy a new clutch disk for my SII, but I have new Disk that has the wrong spline count, but the right diameter. What I am thinkin is to drill the rivots off and rivot it back on to the IH center, whattya think??? Any idea if it will work or not? Also, anyone know how to make pop rivots lowerprofile on the end??? Or will I have to find some other rivots??
thanks

Dude a clutch disk is only like 50 bucks, surely that's got to be less then all the parts and tools to rivet together a new one. Sell some sheet and buy a new one. See the 12" clutch post in the IH section

thats not the point of the question
Klasick68 03-26-2002, 04:35 PM $50, would be nice , but the fawkers at Napa want $80, and no one else will sell just a disk, Tryin to force a new pressure plate on me. I have a almost new 12" setup, (30K miles, outa a 68 1200) that the center of the disk is too rotted to use, and a spare 12" disk that is almost shot. All I have to do is free up the plate and make a disk. I'm just tryin to not spend any more $$ than I have to, thats all. I got the rivots and shit, so that aint no big deal, If ya think it is stupid, i kant balme ya, I just hate buyin new shiat :barf: unless I absolutley have to. Besides, it would be nice to know if this works, cause I am sure that there are some rigz out there ya kant get a disk for amymore.
thanks
Old Scout 03-26-2002, 04:40 PM Go to a rebuilder. The place in my neck of the woods is $35 for new friction material put on to your core. Check your yellow pages for clutch and brake rebuilders.
Klasick68 03-26-2002, 05:13 PM I have asked around all the local garages and shit about places that rebuild clutches around NH, no one knows of any, but good idea on the yellowpages. If I could find a rebuilder, could they throw on thicker friction material?? Now that would kick some A$$

yea that would be real smart.......... push in the clutch and it doesn't disengage!

adjust your likage
Old Scout 03-26-2002, 05:33 PM It's not a linkage thing it would be part of the pressure plate design! It looks like you ignorant on how a clutch works!:flipoff2:
Chief yelling alot 03-26-2002, 05:40 PM shure you can
adjust your likage so it pushes on the the fork that pushes the center baring so it will disengade the presure plate sooner so it comes out fether but you might not have that bit of play your sopost to have
unless your thinking about a Centrifugal clutch then I have no idea and your rite :flipoff2:

OK I'n not tryin to start shit here, but my pressure plate has more travel than it needs to disengage. I COULD get away with using a thicker disk than stock. If I am wrong, go ahead and call me on it.
Thanks

My sig line is right on the money this time!
Klasick68 03-26-2002, 06:23 PM I don't get it, is there or is ther not 1/8" or so of extra lift in a 12" pressure plate that would clear a disc that is thicker by at least 1/16? I have seen the extra travel w/ my own eyes, and maybe it is there to allow it to disengage, This is what I was tryin to find out. I wasnt tryin to piss in any one's:beer: or anything.
PS, i;m not lookin to get banned here, just for facts, if u want me to delete the thread, just say so
thanks
Old Scout 03-26-2002, 06:41 PM If you guys read what I posted about the design of a pressure plate being the problem you may have a clue!
The pressure plate fingers or release rods work like a leaver. Most have a 5.0:1 ratio. Sooooo that means the throw out bearing moves five times as far as the pressure plate surface. When the throw out bearing is fully depressed into the pressure plate, the new stock spec disc may have a 1/8" of an inch clearance (1/16 each side). so there is no room for extra meat!
Klasick68 03-26-2002, 06:55 PM Ok so the 1/8 clearance that is there is the mimum for proper disengagement. I knew what you meant about the pressure plate being the issue I just thought that it could opperate w/ mimimal clearance, but I guess I was wrong. I guess I'll stick w/ the stock thickness disk then. So, are there any better lining materials I could use? (i'm gunna do a search on this as soon as I post this)
thanks
dirtrod 03-26-2002, 08:07 PM Just use a stock new HD disk with organic pads...Spend the $... do it right, buy a new disk !...This shit is too hard to get to,,, unless you like pulling trannys out of 4X4s.
stop getting the old scout excited.

jdjanda 03-26-2002, 09:30 PM Damm, this post is like a bunch of old ladies sitting around having their hair done, arguing about weather to spend the extra money for D cell's for their C cell vibrator.
Just buy a new fawking disk, or find a rebuilder. It's not like you can use a pop rivet gun from Home Depot to attach the new friction material.
Try this:
PERFECTION HYTEST RCF429 $52.99
[Clutch Plate] Reman.; Cover Type: Rockwell; (12"-10T-1 1/4"); w/12" Clutch

You have to call the customer service number to order the clutch disk.
