Puffdragon suggested that I post this for everyone to learn from.

I pulled the front portals apart last weekend so I could remove the drum backing plates and had a couple of things happen. When I removed the passenger side portal housing, the main drive stub came out with the rear bearing attached. This is about what I thought should happen, but when I pulled the other side, the portal housing came off without the drive stub. I pulled the stub out and it brought only half of the rear bearing with it - is this a bad sign? Isn't the drive stub pressed into the large bearing in the portal housing? The passenger side stub feels very solid and seems like it would need to be pressed out. Also, one of the drive stubs has what looks sort of like a frost plug in the back side whereas the other does not - which should it be? This is the first time I've had to pull the portals apart so I'm kind of in a whole other world here. HELP!

Maybe try and get the two guy's from Exaxt to look at these pic's. They have lots of info on portals. Try pm'ing ''ryeguy''

I have removed a few portals here lately and everything was pressed in tight. The main drive into the bearing in the box had to be pressed out and the hubs were pressed off also. All the bearings in the mounting plate remained in the plate.

Maybe press off another main drive and check it with a micrometer around the bearing surface. See if there is a difference. Check two bearings against each other.

Also try and find a spare axle for parts........good luck.

Yeah, I already talked to Mac at Exaxt about it. He was going to try and get some more info for me - Rob (ryeguy) is out of town at the moment.

The top pic is correct. The portal on the right in the second pic is wrong. The bearing has been damaged some how. Can you slip the gear out of the roller bearings. If not, it has been fused or damaged. The bearings should stay in the housing, and the race should be on the gear. I couldnt understand what you were looking at by your description, but now I do. The splined side of the gear may or may not have a minor press fit into the big outer bearing that is c clipped into the housing. It really should have a little press fit, but on a crawler it should be fine. I beleive you can replace the bearing races on the gears, but I cant remember. Also, it looks like the plug on the right portal has been put in backwards, but I cant tell from the pic. Does the plug (looks like a freeze plug) dome in or out. It should be inwards jsut like in your engine block. These as far as I know are just seals from the outside of the hub. This in itself is not a big deal, but it does show some serious tampering by the previous owner.

Puff - the plug in the gear to the right is domed out. I guess this means I should try and remove it and put it in the proper direction? Also, when you ask if I can slip the gear out of the roller bearings, are you refering to the large bearing c-clipped into the housing or the one on the back side of the gear?

I replied earlier, but it did not go through. So, short and sweet. The portal on the left side is exactly what you want to see on the right box. The only issue I can see on teh left box is that the gear came out by hand from the outer bearing. It really should have a light press fit. BUt it might be fine to run. The portal on the right has been severly tampered with, and looks to have an incorrect bearing on it.
