Got new exhaust on the Pig and started having starting problems. What I've come up with so far is the fuel line is too close to the exhaust and the fuel is boiling and it seems that it won't pump through the mechanical fuel pump (Chevy V8) barely and fuel coming through to the carb when its running and leaving me with no fuel in the carb when I go to do a cold startup after it has sat. Does this make sense or am I just about to lose my fuel pump? If this is the problem, I'll make a heat shield or wrap with header tape.

Sounds like a vapor lock to me.
or it could be the fuel pump. Typically the fuel pump either pumps or it does not. If the diaphram fails it won't pump..

No, it doesn't make sense. If it was a fuel line heating and vapor lock issue, it would only be a problem when it is hot and not a problem on a cold start.
It is either boiling out because the manifold is too hot (not likely on a SBC) or the carb is leaking fuel.

What kind of carb are you running?

sounds like a possible back flow problem?!

I would check the fule line at the pump could be sucking air?

I moved the line away from the exhaust, but am going to be at the firestation all day and won't be able to see if it helps. Tomorrow I'll run it and see.

I had this same problem before but it wasn't when I started it for the first time but it was when it was running for a while, then if I turned it off I couldn't get it to start.
I had a couple of issues. in the engine bay the return and receive fuel lines where metal for about 1 foot (right on the TBI connection) and I also put my fuel filter inside the engine bay (metal fuel filter) so I got rubber hoses and moved the filter and everything works great now.
Hope this helps.

If there is no fuel in the bowl after the car has been sitting a bit then your fuel bowls are leaking and need to be epoxied up to seal the leak from the bottom.
