have a friend that has a 82 wagoneer with a straight six that is shot. he would like to put in a 360 but doesn't know what it entails. is the V8 a bolt in swap or do the motor mounts need to be changed and another tranny installed? thanks for the input.

If I were in your shoes I would tell swamper to pipe down, and then give it a shot. A 360 will bolt up to his tranny. You will need to modify the passenger motor mount or get a new one for a v8. Also you may need to get a fly wheel, if the 360 came out of a automatic then you will need one, or you can get the 258 fly wheel balenced to the 360, but its not usually worth the effort. You will need to do somehting about the fuel line, the stright six fuel pump is on the other side of the engine compared to the location of the pump on the 360. You will have to deal with exhaust, you can get a y pipe for the V* and get it conected to his stock exhaust.

Dont let these guys shoot down your jeep dreams, this is one of the easiest engine swaps you will ever come across. But as with most things you are going to run into some problems, so be prepared(dont expect to start on saturday mourning and have him back on the trail by 5 that night, it aint going to happen.

Also I dont know what tranny you have, but be sure it is up to handling V8 power, if you are going to scatter the tranny every time you dump the clutch it aint worth it, get a new 6 or a stronger tranny then the 360.

It is a doable project for the average mechanic, but it is still a project.

Good Luck

Nobody is trying to shoot anyone's problems down. But you should do your homework beforehand.

And if you do your homework, and have the few extra things that you'll need on hand, you can be done in a weekend easy.

thanks guys:beer: I'll be sure to relay the good info to him and I'm sure he'll apreciate it. Thats the cool thing about this site is someone usually knows the answer, and then there's some people (swamper) that should just keep their opinions to themselves. :flipoff2:

My, Swamper, aren't we the big, bad, hardcore web-wheeler? I'm assuming you were just born with an innate knowledge of all things mechanical. Why not cut Jeenjer some slack for even considering a DIY motor swap? Ya gotta learn somehow ya asswipe.

hey swamper, why don't you send your daddy up here so he can help me with my project. He seemed to have gotten yours up and running.

Let's see, I never did an engine swap before I did my '47 CJ2a from the ground up. Also my first set of bumpers, steering box mount, roll cage (12 pt. no less), and I even figured out how to make a 'cruise case work in JEEP!

Just do your homework, or figure it out yourself-I did!

Having friends with vehicles like yours helps too, to bounce ideas off of and help with the inevitable problems you are going to encounter!

Good luck!

P.S. Swamper lighten up, you did always know everthing! :D

I did a 350 swap and put in a sm465 to a 205 and put on full width chevy axles and it was the first big project I have ever done on my jeep. It's taken a while but I learned and I got it finished. You need to just take a deep breath and dig into it. It is going to take you more than a weekend though. It really helps if you have a friend who knows what they are doing that can give you a hand. You'll get it figured out eventually. Don't listen to swamper either, he is full of shit. He thinks he is so bad ass because he has a whole 32 posts over newbe status, well hot damn.:flipoff2: Your doing what you need to by asking around. When you do do everything, get everything you posibly can running and ready to go before you put it in because it is a whole lot harder once it is in. I waited on little things like my clutch and that was a pain in the ass to get working after the fact. Don't anticipate it going smoothly becuase it probably wont. If you want to do your own exaust you get get pre-bent tubing and all the fittings a www.summitracing.com. I did my own exaust for about a third the price and all I used was my little 110 welder and an $80 bubeing bender. It worked good for little bends but not anything big. Good luck.

jer , I'm glad you asked that Q. I've been bugging my wife to call her friend in Fort Morgan to sell me a 76 Waggy with a blown 6. My wife is scared that I'm gonna put a 360 in its place. Well, she's right.
As to swamper, he's usually a good guy, somebody must've pissed in his cheerios that day. Just in a bad mood for the day maybe?:flipoff2:
I had been informed by reliable pirate users that if anyone has a Q, they should step up to bat and swing, but of course, try to do the homework first. Sometimes the search doesn't come up with the right info due to wrong entries used, or sometimes in my caes, the search "times out" on me.
Tell your friend good luck with the swap, and pm me if you need help.:D
