: EB short axle length ????
Nobody 03-26-2002, 09:13 PM Does anyone have a short axle from an EB laying around that you can measure for me? Best measurement from end of axle to center of u-joint cap.
I'm not looking for hearsay, or numbers from warns website. I want some reliable data please. Thanks!:usa:
FearMe 03-26-2002, 10:23 PM Front or rear?
And I'm not going by your house anymore cause your never there.
Nobody 03-26-2002, 10:35 PM uhhh....front axle....thanks!
I think the only time I'm not home is when you stop by. I'm here the rest of the time!
I had to go rescue a cheby 44 from the scrapper today. I'm trying to make sure the short axle is a direct replacement on my EB 44. It's supposed to be the exact same size(according to warn). I just want to verify it. Would hate to be out on the trail and find out that its a tad to long!
FearMe 03-26-2002, 10:43 PM Short axle front on an EB 44, full size Ford 44, Chev 44 will all work. Notice, not a perfect fit but they will work, I ran them all and they worked till the u-joints shit out. Some were a bit longer but the lock right never noticed, you can grind off a little if it worries you.
Nobody 03-27-2002, 08:07 AM I know on the full size ford axles some grinding is required. I'd rather not grind on the cheby axle unless I have to.
FearMe 03-27-2002, 08:45 AM Then don't grind. There is enough room in your carrier for the extra length. I just stuffed them in, even with the Lock Right I had they worked fine.
Nobody 03-27-2002, 08:56 AM I know when EBSteve regeared his front end he put in an EZ locker, and upgraded to the fullsize axle shaft. He said it didn't fit, and he had to grind some off the end.
Maybe I'll just swap the ones I have and use the EB shaft as a trail spare. Then I won't get caught with my pants down.
I'd still like to know the length of a the EB axle though. I know some one must have one laying around!
welndmn 03-27-2002, 10:49 AM Are the TTB short sides the same as well?

Yes, but they use interchangeable hubs and rotors, and I think the short side axle just might be interchageable as well. Some one surely has one of those laying around.
saf-t scissors 03-27-2002, 11:43 AM Do you know how long it is?
Short side TTB inner is 15.69", outers are 9.92"

Where did you get that measurement from? Is that end of axle to center u-joint?
If that's number is accurate, then they won't work. The EB axles are supposed to be 18.31 according to warn, but that's what I'm trying to find out.
welndmn 03-27-2002, 02:09 PM My buddy has some, i will measuse, but he will not get back untill Monday

I got that from Dana... yeah, u-joint center to the end. I checked their BOM pages, but none of the parts lists for 78/79 axle assemblies come up.
welndmn 03-27-2002, 03:31 PM What is the website?
You can cross that with '73-87 Chevy K–10, Blazer for the outter
and '69-78 Chevrolet Corporate Pickup, Blazer for the inner
the chevys' fit US EB just fine
the size (from warn) are
Outter 9.94
inner 18.31

I wouldn't have questioned this except for the fact that I have a cheby axle that measures ~18.56 (18 9/16)
I'm hoping someone has an EB axle that they can measure so we can see if it is in fact slightly shorter.
It's very possible that warn sells the cheby axles a hair shorter so they could use the same part # for both applications.
1uglyranger 03-27-2002, 05:50 PM The last set of axles that I ordered from Randy's R&P were for my EB D44, and they wanted the measurement of the shortside inner, the said that there were two differant lengths, but couldn't give me a reason why. They were both really close, like less than half an inch...
My short side spare measures 18.310 from end to u-joint center.

Is your spare original EB? Measured yourself? Does your tape actually go to 1/512" ?? :flipoff2: or did you mean 18.3125 (18 5/16) ? :D Do you know the year of the axle?
You bought axles from Randy's? I assume with the large u-joint. How much did that cost?

Damn.........thats a lot of questions.........:flipoff2:
I just measured it about 30 seconds before I posted, with the tape it acctually measured about 18 3/8" (18.375) so I just rounded:flipoff2: The axle is the original 76 EB axle with the magnifficent 260 joint!!! And I bought those axles from Randys last year for around 300 with two extra joints. They were the no name alloy inners with spicer outers. I'm still waiting for them to get the full snap ring chromo's in stock....they are only like $100 for the inners, and $60 for the outers!!

Nobody 03-27-2002, 08:03 PM Thanks Ugly!
I'd still like more measurements from other people for future reference.
A measurement of a fullsize ford short axle would be nice.
Currently we have:
76 stock EB axle ~ 18 3/8
mid 70's 8 lug cheby ~18 9/16

Not exactly the case I busted the axel and went to swap in my spare and it was too long so I had to grind it BUT that was before I did the gears and EZ locker I had a trashlock in there when it was a problem.
