: Muffler Advice
Hooch 03-27-2002, 01:18 AM Hi all,
I need to refab my exhaust as it is falling to bits and is leaking like a basket. I can get the front downpipe that connects to the exhaust manifold and want to fab up the rest of the exhaust myself.
I can buy the whole exhaust but rather build it myself as I will then be able to route it the way I want.
The mufflers I can get in the U.K. are the following:
Borla stainless (read expensive)
Flowmaster although I couldn't find one with a 2" in/outlet though. The chart started off at 2.5"
Dynomax which makes the thrush turbo mufflers and the glass packs.
Cherry bomb
Can you recommend any of them or tell me which ones to stay away from??
Also my aim is to get a bit of a decent sound as well (if this is at all possible with a 258), but don't want it screaming and force the neighbors to move :D
Bare in mind that this is also my my daily driver...
Another question:
What way to route? All the way to the back or to the side and exit in front of the rear wheel? Pro's/con's

YJ4LIFE 03-27-2002, 01:51 AM I have a 2.25" in out flowmaster 40 series. It REALLY!! helped getting on the freeway over stock. I have the 4.2L.

KAcrawler 03-27-2002, 06:22 AM i would go with a flowmaster, at least here in the states they are resonably priced. They are a good muffler and will last. I would run the exhaust straight back and put the muffler right behind the t-case with a turn down after that. anything that runs out to the edge of the body stands a pretty good chance of getting in the way.
Chrisjeep7 03-27-2002, 06:50 AM i too am looking to redo my exhaust, sum a bitch side pipes! i have a 360 and i want some good sound and keep it in the frame. i have a TF727, what is the best way to clear the tranny and have some good sounding exhaust? dual or single it dont matter.

Keith Haw 03-27-2002, 08:02 AM Be careful where you end the exhaust. It has to exit the underside of the body to be legal in most places. It could be VERY dangerous also if running a full top.

Hooch 03-27-2002, 08:43 AM Well the law ain't the problem over here in the U.K.
I can exit where I like, but obviously if I make a side exit it could get damaged when I hang the Jip on its rockers and this has happened. Then again exiting at the back could also be a problem as I've also caught the rear corners before where the exhaust currently exits.
I also want to make sure that I don't start drawing the gasses into the Jip and choke myself to death; I know nicer ways to do this :smokin:

Johncm 03-27-2002, 03:37 PM Go the Dynomax, but get the Ultra Flow. Good cconstruction, low end power and sound great. Not to loud like the flow master.
AGGIE_04 03-27-2002, 05:01 PM No one has said glasspack yet? Well, that's what i use because they are a great offroad muffler. They don't hang on anything b/c they don't have a lip, they don't hang down but an inch or so, they're CHEAP so if you do bust one, its only about fifteen bucks or so to fix and they are decent perfomers. You're may not be able to get that extra 5 hp out of them, but they're better than stock and i don't plan on doing any mud drags with mine. I'm really suprised more people don't run them instead of destroying a $60 muffler again and again. If I was REALLY concerned about hp or only ran on the street, I would get a good performance muffler, but not if i'm just going to tear it up. :bounce:
I went with Borla stainless even though they are expensive they sound and last great.
YJ4LIFE 03-27-2002, 05:25 PM Flowmasters don't take up too much space and they take a beating. I have a nice long gash on the bottom of mine and it didn't break open. $75 for muffler and installation

i agree with you. i have run flowmasters, hooker aero flow, and now glasspacks. i like the sounds of the others but the glasspacks are a better choice for a trail rig in my opinion. they are easy to tuck up inbetweent he frame rails and get out of the way and still have room for anti wrap bar, tucked drive train, etc.
Chrisjeep7 03-28-2002, 08:27 AM i have glasspacks on mine...i like that they are cheap but they are too damn loud! does any one have a pic of how they set up thier exhuast on their CJ with an auto? i would like to see some options.

KAcrawler 03-28-2002, 01:40 PM it would be like a shit kickin aggie to run glass packs... and you have to be kidding me about not being loud we used to make fun of trucks in highschool with glass packs we called them "whoom pows" because thats what they did. If you are really interested in a muffler that doesn't get in the way, JEGS sells a muffler made by a company here in texas that is made up of discs that fit into the tail pipe. They are about 50 bucks for a pipe and i haven't heard them, they swear they sound like a flowmaster and the 3 disc insert is quiet, but i am thinking of going with them later on when i need some more room.
CaptainFleXJ151 03-28-2002, 03:49 PM Dynomax is my choice. The sound is great and not too loud. They are inexpensive as well. Side exit is a cool way to the exhaust.
AGGIE_04 03-28-2002, 10:14 PM Well swamper502, my friend's uncle's brother's friend has a cousin who thinks that glasspacks aren't loud, but that may not be an accurate source. The muffler you are talking about is a supertrapp and I had a dirt bike with one on it and it was the loudest most abnoxious muffler I ever ran, but it came with it so I ran it. Car supertrapps may be better, but I doubt it. Also, since you have to put it at the end of the pipe, your mounting location is greatly limited. I have a glasspack on my dd cherokee and its not loud at all, but that is mostly due to the cat. I have also driven a dumptruck with a 460 and dual glasspacks and its not too loud, but the neighbors do notice it. I don't think a glass pack would be too loud on a 258, but since this is your dd, you may want to consider a dynomax. They are queiter and out perform flowmaster and many others, per Car Craft.
KAcrawler 03-29-2002, 06:17 AM ok here is the link
http://www.carchemistry.com/ccinserts.html
you can put them any where in the pipe, you can even put them directly in the header if you want although the guy says that the larger the pipe the louder they are so going with the 2 1/2" version would be the best if you are looking for it to be quiet.
so put that in your pipe and smoke it

Glasspacks are not spark arresting mufflers and are illegal on any US Forest service land. Also Illegal on any Minnesota DNR land.
snacksnack 03-29-2002, 08:12 AM glass packs on a stock 258 with no hedders barely sounds any different then a stock muffler
also the supertrapps dont get very loud either hadone on my bike to and it was but different kind of performance there :flipoff2:
hoehand 03-30-2002, 12:52 PM I disagree, I have glasspacks on my 258 and it is loud, not obnoxiously loud, but it definately does not sound anything like a 258 with mufflers. I will be taking them off when I do my motor swap, you really want a spark arresting muffler. If you run trails in creek bottoms with other rigs, it is imperative. I have seen the creek go up in flames a couple of times when one rig would roll and would dump a small quantity of gas in the water, then all it takes is one spark or backfire, and you become a stuntman in training.
Dive30 03-31-2002, 05:11 AM I ran the ultimate redneck exhauast for my 360. Headman Headers (yes I am that cheap) to the $8.00 autozone flex pipes to dual $15.00 2-1/2" Cherry Bomb Glass Packs. It was a lot quieter than the open headers!
I'm a lot happier with the more civilized single 2-1/2" no cat to 14" super turbo. Good rumble, roars when you get on it, but still makes the daily commute nice. Did lose some overall juice though
:(

My vote goes to the Flowmaster. Mostly because of their construction. They are very solidly built and can take a beating.

Jakesteramalamajama 04-01-2002, 04:53 AM I just picked up a pair of Flowmaster 40 series for my RJ350 swap... Noisy, but I figure they should quiet down a little with a crossover...
whatdaphuk 04-01-2002, 06:48 AM i have a Thrush glasspack on my XJ and i dont think it is too loud, i really dont hear it other than 1800-2500rpms, anything else and the Swampers drown it out. $17 from Summit.

I've got the same setup too (minus the bailing wiring) I had headmans inframe headders and dual glasspacks. That combination was the biggest gathering of turds I've seen in a while. I replaced it all with manifolds and turbo mufflers and dented one the weekend after I got it finished.
go cheap, but not too cheap.
