: RockCrawling, thinking "out of the box"
Brandon 03-27-2002, 07:24 AM Let's face it, when people go to the box they are not really "camping." I got to thinkin yesterday (dangerous thought) and with all the people in the area, why can't we all get together and get a ton (lotsa tons) of rock and make our own little sluice at.. don't laugh.. Prarie City. You can tow your rig, park on flat ground, bring lunch etc. It IS public land allready DESIGNATED for recreation. Greenies will be happy, we will be happy, etc..
There are a few rocks there but I am talkin something that makes Hollister's "mini rubicon" look like a gravel road. Not a complete park makeover (that would be nice) just one big rock garden..
In the past atleast 3 years my wheeling trips have consisted of take off from sac, wheel the trail, and come home. No relaxing involved and that is getting old. I do want to "try out" my rigs but ut would sure be nice to be able to do it local and the underpass by my house isn't that exciting anymore
Figured this might spark some interesting stuff - so what do ya think?
Cal4wheel did a big job a while back which is great for the beginner but they forgot about the hardcore crowd. I of course do not want to give up camping but it would be nice to have the next carnage event at a park, imagine that good PR that would bring..

I never been there, but I might think that it was pretty core when it was put in. I think we've just seen the bar get raised so high in the last couple years that alot of stuff looks real tame now :)
Great idea though, it would be nice them do the same thing down here in the park at Gorman;)
You could get with some excavation companies that are blasting rock for some new strip mall. They need a place to dump that stuff. They're putting in a new Lowes near me & they're having to go down through about 75' of rock to level the area for the store & parking. Every day, a new pile of VW sized boulders that have to be hauled off. The rock crawlers must be drooling when they see this LOL.
TEX
bigdude 03-27-2002, 07:53 AM I work for a mining comapany in FL. Yes there are rocks (hard pan) just really deep. We take it all and put it in one big pile. It makes for a fun afternoon of crawling.
We practically give the stuff away if anyone wants it, the hard part is transport. It costs a pretty penny to get land movers to haul these big VW sized boulders. that's why we continue to wheel on company property as opposed to moving them to someones private land.
If you happen to know someone with ties to an earth-moving or trucking company it might help, but we just couldn't get enough finances together to relocate our playground.
Lance 03-27-2002, 07:56 AM Well I've already talked to Prarie City about this, and they are all for it. Problem is, they don't have the $$$ to buy the rocks. So the rocks would need to be donated. They DO have heavy equipment to move the rocks around once they are there, though.
Brandon 03-27-2002, 08:03 AM Duuuude, that pic is evil! LOL
Man, the more I research this it seems everyone has talked to PC about this
So why don't we all work together and do it! I am pretty sure with all the boards out there someone has some HUGE boulders to donate, not only that I am sure there is equipment and operators out there willing to help along with the PC crew..
I stopped by the cal4wheel office yesterday and talked to them about it too, everybody seems to be for it.

Kind of like this!
bigdude 03-27-2002, 08:26 AM Dayumm that's a big rock:eek:
But that's exactly what I talking about. One trip only get a couple boulders. So figure you need 20 trips (we would've) that would either take 1 truck a week or two, or a few trucks a few days (depending on distance), plus the payloader. It added up fast
The sad part was that my company would give us the rocks, we just didn't have the money to move them to private property:(
Patman 03-27-2002, 08:51 AM There has to be someone on here that has a connection with the big construction co's in the area. Sometimes they have to pay to get rid of rock, if set up correctly they could just dump it for free in "the pile"
I know every time I drive down WhiteRock in Eldo Hills I drooooooool on that big pile that they've just dumped by the side of the road.
I know the donating rock thing has been discussed before.
What about holding a RockDrive, collect donations to go towards hauling costs (if the rocks where found)
Or what about finding someone that will donate thier time, and Truck. Someone on here has to own a huge Dump. Everyone gets together and pitches in for some fuel costs.
ToyFamily 03-27-2002, 08:59 AM there is construction going on all around rocklin/ roseville area and they get piles of rocks which they just ship away, I'll tell my dad to keep a look out then someone would have to come with the equiptment to move it. I knew a lady who wanted bolders for her front yard and saw some construction workers loading those up and she asked where they take em' , they said they jsut dump them, so she paid them a few bucks and they delivered them to her house ( on the down low of coarse) .... OR ask H8monday to keep he's working construction in roseville

NO problem! My B-in-law is the VP of a large construction company (http://www.sddeacon.com/) . They build big stuff all over cali.
I would be happy to get them involved, but there can't be any problems!

Or, how about hosting a competition 4x4 event & using the money collected at the admissions gate to put toward the rock-moving fund?
I know someone who could sanction a mud race for ya, hint hint ;)
And how would that be for irony, a mud race to raise $$ for a rock-crawling course! :D
TEX
LOPPY 03-27-2002, 09:58 AM Where's Jeff (H8monday), he's got those connections and he's local right now. If you know how, get ahold of him. Outstanding idea.
Gordon 03-27-2002, 10:24 AM We have to make the construction companies want to donate rocks. That means we have to give them a write off for it. Decorative rock is expensive the scraped up kind from a construction sight is expensive to get rid of. If we could get a nonprofit involved to give the contractors a reciept for donating rock based on the higher price, I bet all kinds of rock would get donated, but it would have to be made easy, like they drop it off at PC and the guy at the interance writes them the reciept.
RYSYJ 03-27-2002, 10:24 AM This is a outstanding idea, what can we all do to help?? How do we get this idea into action?
rock is cheap. trucking it around is not.

I think that this is a good idea. I little bit more complicate but a good idea.
Another thing to consider, there's no reason why this rock garden needs to be finished when a certain size has been reached. It would be nice to get something together quickly (under a year?). After the first stage of the rock garden is completed I think that more boulders should be accpeted. Make it a constantly evolving and growing rock garden.
With that said, if there is anybody in the Portland area that wants a couple of big boulders you can come and get them. The biggest one is about the size of a refrigerator. There aren't a lot of rocks though. Maybe somebody needs to add to their existing rock garden?
Jakesteramalamajama 03-27-2002, 11:03 AM Great! ...until a family of spotted owls moves in. Then you're FAWKED!

All I envision is a constantly growning rock playground, an acre plus of just ROCK.
DAMN!! I gotta go clean up now.:emb:
Old Scout 03-27-2002, 11:27 AM I just got off the phone with a big wig at Teichert (http://www.teichert.com/ta/index.html) . It looks to be all to easy to get 3' to 10' rock for free.

Yea I remember something like that. It's a little foggy, too many posts to keep up on! I thought it was unreal that his neighbors didn't kill him over it, I know mine would!
Brandon 03-27-2002, 12:44 PM Nope Ryan, figured we'd talk to the people on Saturday when we are there..
Lotsa good news from Bob though!
Lance 03-27-2002, 12:55 PM I can't remember the guy's name @ PC who you wanna talk to.... But his son Marty works at Grady's Extreme Offroad. Call Grady's, and talk to Motor-Mouth-Marty. :D
toyzilla 03-27-2002, 01:21 PM Count me in for any help that you need!
Monkeyboy 03-27-2002, 01:21 PM Their is a huge pile of rocks sitting on the side of the road just miles from Praire city.
I'm pretty sure they just don't have a place to permanently dump them yet :D
HMMMMM Wonder if we an arrange to have them dropped off at the OHV park :D
Monkeyboy 03-27-2002, 01:24 PM I know that some people drive by this pile of rocks every thime they drive to Praire city.
Aggro 03-27-2002, 01:43 PM neat idea. If people to tow the rocks on trailers are needed, i'll tow.
derek 03-27-2002, 01:44 PM yup, end of white rock road. pass them every day to and from work. often thought about the rock pile they could build.
derek

I have bad dreams about breaking my rig on that pile of rocks on my way to the Rubicon. That pile is just so inviting sittingtheir on the side of the road.
I'm betting that they can have that pile of rocks moved to the park no problem.
woody99 03-27-2002, 02:02 PM I think that rock in EDH on White Rock Road migh be serpentine rock. Every few years or so there is a big stink about it up here talking about the asbestos in it!!!
They just blasted out tons of rock for the new El Dorado Hills exit but all they did was just grind it up. They had practically a whole factory set-up just to grind that rock up. Like CAMO said rock is cheap trucking is not
Rerard 03-27-2002, 02:11 PM Damn thats a great idea... pairie is so softcore, but its the only place that is close, that would be awsome if it got some variety.... its alread pretty muddy in the winter, but its missing the rocks.
Rover Addiction 03-27-2002, 02:11 PM Yes, they get some asbestos from serpentene. This stuff is the Cali state rock! Talk about a screwy state.. Anyway, they tell me that its ok so long as you're not grinding it up and snorting it. Of course, I'd bet if you used that stuff, some greenie meanie would come along, do some air sampling near the rocks, and then declare the whole site a hazardous waste site because of a little dust in the air. :(
I'd be careful with that one..
However, I hope we can figure out how to do this and keep the environazis happy too. Keep going guys!!

Brandon 03-27-2002, 02:19 PM I have an offer for rocks and delivery, I will be talking with the PC people this week/weekend. I'll keep everyone posted :)
If this all works whatya say bout the Carnage event at PC?
Aggro 03-27-2002, 02:23 PM I'd go there! It's farther than the con for me but I'd still go and try it out.

Not a big deal. Most Asbestos is not harmfull. And none of the serpentine in the Sierras is harmfull. The only really bad asbestos comes from Chile. It all depends on the type of fibers that compose the rock. THe stuff in the sierra Nevadas is straight. The curly stuff is the bad stuff. Your little aveoli in your lungs cannot get rid of it...
Monkeyboy 03-27-2002, 02:54 PM I can drive a non street legal rig all the way to praire city on back roads from Antioch :D
WOOOOHOOOOO
Now if we can get carneige to mut a shiat load of rocks in the park we could go rock crawling after work when my rig is done.
Patman 03-27-2002, 03:16 PM Don't think asbestos is a real concern. Clearcreek is littered with tons of it. (used to be an Asbestos mine!!) and vehicular recreation is, has, and will continue to be allowed
