: Response from Senator O'Connell on offroading in California...
About a month ago I sent a letter to every senator and house member in California asking them respectfully to help us in keeping public ORV areas open...
I have gotten a response from two senators...posted about the first, here is the second...
His office sent me thise two messages...
Mr. Divin:
>Thank you for contacted the Senator recently to express your concerns on Off

Dear Mr. Divin:
Thank you for contacting me recently to share with me your support of the continued use of motorized vehicles on the Oceano Dunes. I appreciate your taking the time to share your concerns with me.
As you are aware, the coastal sand dunes in southern San Luis Obispo County is undoubtedly one of the finest and most valuable environmental areas in the State of California. It is my strong belief that we have a responsibility to protect and preserve natural treasures like the dunes for future generations to enjoy. That is why during my tenure in the State Legislature I have consistently supported efforts to protect areas such as the dunes from further development and subsequent pollution. More specifically, I have made a conscious effort to seek adequate funding to continue to properly maintain our state parks and the species that make these parks their home.
However, when speaking to various city officials and park representatives regarding local residents concerns with the impact on the increase in recreational use at the Oceano Dunes, I have repeatedly been told that significant efforts have been made to try and address many of these concerns, including the protection of the federally listed Snowy Plover. Additionally, I am reminded that as compared to the vehicle and recreational use in the early 80’s, park officials have made great strives to improve the once out-of-control situation at the park. I also understand our city officials and business leaders concerns, and support for the parks economic contributions to our surrounding communities. I hope this information is helpful.
Again, thank you for your e-mail. If you have any further questions on this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me or a member of my staff. I look forward to working with you.
Sincerely,
JACK O’CONNELL
This is what I sent them back today...
Senator O'Connell and Mrs. LaCaro,
First off I would like to thank you for the response. You and Senator O'Connell are one of the TWO representatives of the state of California that I have received a reply from. I email each and every one both in the House and the Senate.
I appreciate the response and would like to assure you that I will notify my fellow off roading patrons in California, which currently is floating around 10,000, which are members of a Bulletin Board called Pirate 4x4.
I just want to reiterate my concern that these legendary trails in California do not fall prey to the environmentalist view that the only good land is untouched land. I hope that you help us in our fight to keep public land OPEN TO THE PUBLIC for off roading. We are willing to donate money and help in the maintenance of public lands that are used for off roading. Dirt trails through the forest should be the least of worries for environmentalists.
I would also like to remind you that for every one bad apple in the off roading community that there are 50 individuals and 10 clubs that respect and lovingly enjoy the Off Road Vehicle areas.
The key to preserving these areas for future enjoyment to all peoples is to help put the environmentalists and the off roaders together to not only enjoy and use, but to preserve and better these areas. We need to be able to understand each other and promote the understanding that the off roading community is willing to donate time, money, resources, and man hours to undo any damage the the 'bad apples' have created and to go further than that in bettering these areas for furthere generations to enjoy.
Once again, thank you for the kind response and please help us in our struggle.
Respectfully,
Tyler G. Divin
Ya'll need to make up your mind on this guy and keep him in mind when voting time comes around. I cant do that part, yall are the ones that live in his state and can make or break him...
mtndewmaniac 03-27-2002, 10:07 AM Way to go Tyler, aka; TyTy.
My hat is off to ya.
And this communication took place acrss the american country. If Senator O'Connel is willing to communicate to a wheelin enthusiast in Alabama, then this Senator is willing to step up to the plate and bat for us.

Great job! Now if we could get the rest of the off-roader's here in California to care as much and an off-roader in Alabama, we might be able to save our access.....

I'm not sure myself. It sounded to me like he was for the limiting access to the area in question... damn politicians and their doublespeak.
RCKRATZ 03-27-2002, 11:25 AM I think he said that he had "no comment" fawkin politicians. Why can't they ever give you a straight answer?

for once wouldn't it be nice to hear a politician say something like.
ya i am down with ya. fawk them eco nazis. i vow to keep that area open for all the public to use. after all it IS your land. :D

offroadr35 03-27-2002, 01:19 PM the response from the first senator was WAY better. This guy has nothing to say and will say it all day long. Personally i'd rather have a politician that will tell me straight up that he doesn't agree with me than one who won't tell me anything. This guy is supposed to be your voice to the senate...what a joke.

YellowSub1962 03-27-2002, 01:35 PM Tyler, Thumbs up on the involvement!!!
I have a question for you that will hopefully help out a few others in getting involved..... How long did it take to wite your letter?
I will agree with the majority here in that O'Connell's reply seems quite vague. If I had to translate it from a my point of view, his letter would be something like this....
"Thanks you for contacting me. Since you took the effort to do so, I should assume you also get involved in the voting process, which means I could use your vote, or at least I should be nice to you in case one of my buddies needs your vote. I would like to tell you that I'm just going to sit on the fence till someone offers me more money. Till then I will act concerned and act as if I really care about a fawking beach or your access to it - after all, I'm a politician, and it's all about me.
Sincerely,
Your Buddy Jack O'Connell"
I may have read too deep into it, maybe not, but it was fun either way :)

slo-vic 03-27-2002, 08:56 PM I think Sen. O'Connell will have no say on this issue. He recently won an election for another office (link below). I'm not sure if that was just a Primary election or not. Can you hold two elected positions? I'm not sure.
I live and work in S.L.O. county (dunes location). I enjoy wheeling the dunes. I also enjoy the vast coastline that is undeveloped and preserved. I'm blessed that I can enjoy both. Slo county has a huge area of coastline that is undeveloped and preserved, more than most southern and central california counties. There is more than enough coastline to accomodate both intrests. I support keeping the dunes open for wheeling, and I am pretty vocal about the cause. Please support this cause.
Please support WWW.SEMA.ORG. They fight hard to protect your right to modify and wheel your vehicle. They are a huge lobby in the 4wd industry. Ask Before you buy from a manufacturer, "Are you a member of SEMA?" That goes for media too! Lance?

I agree with yall that he is sitting on the fence on this issue, however I amglad that he got off his ass to write me back. I just make sure and tell um that I am in DAILY contact with THOUSANDS of california voters. For me, an Alabama resident, this is the best I can do.
The letter did not take long to write. The thing that took the longest was individually emailing each one. I didnt want them to get a big ass mass spam and just delete it.
My one letter is not gonna be a deciding factor. What gets it is when they get several every DAY! I cant donate but I can word some convincing letters.
Anyway, I did this cause I care about the sport of offroading. I want my kids to be able to do it in California or wherever.
The other senator that I posted about that wrote me back was definalty on the ball with us. He specifically stated that he would do whatever he could to keep public lands open to the PUBLIC.
Anyway, I hope this helps. Yall follow up on this guy. Email the shit outta him and hell get the point.
I lost his email but here is his assistants. I can almost gaurantee that she screens his emails anyway...

I'm sorry, DID I FUCKING SAY I WANTED GORE IN OFFICE? I'm just saying that maybe since GW has put us back 10 years in foreign policy and bombed the shit out of people before he had all the facts that he might not be suitable. Not to mention all the shady dealings with oil companies and the dumbass steel tariff. I just want someone who's got a halfway decent set of morals in office. The environment can be saved and wheeled at the same time, its just that both sides are too stupid to realize it.
I dont want this to turn into a Presidential debate but your a dumbass...
Bombing people before he had all the facts? A) FUCK foreign policy with Afghanistan. They harbor terrorists, fuck them.
B) He had all the facts as I saw it... FACT 1 They bombed and kileld thousands of innocent people FACT 2 he made a demand to expel terrorists FACT 3 Afghanistan continued to harbor Osama and did squat to help us FACT 4 they knew what would happen as a result of their noncompliance.
C) MORALS!!! GW has more morals in his pinky than all the democrates IN OFFICE combined!
D) Im glad he bombed the shit out of them. And now, he has drawn them out into open battle with the US cause their pride wont let them hide anymore. Now we are slaughtering the leaders and sheep of the terrorist movement in a battle that they cannot win.
E) Fuck any nation that will cheer in the streets as thousands of our innocent Americans die in a burning building as a result of cowards like terrorists. THey were NOT willing to help us in our fight against terorism after the 9/11 incodent. They knew the consequences and now they are facing them
Also, if a Democrate was in office we would be holding terrorist simpathy and understanding seminars as they prepared to hit us agaiin.
schuss 03-28-2002, 05:55 AM I have no problem with taking down the terrorists, the problem is that bush killed a minimum of something like 3500 civilians (look up Marc Herold's study online, very interesting). Bush is NOT a good president, as he is seeking to erode our privacy and protection laws, and denying freedom of information act requests at a much higher rate than any other president before him. I don't want to turn this into a debate either, so lets just agree to disagree on this one.
DemoMike 03-28-2002, 01:41 PM I can see no one is gonna be able to convince TyTy that GW isn't a saint, but if he's the best the GOP can put on the ticket, oh well! GW might've been a good Governor, but he ain't cut from presidential cloth. IMO:D
Schuss originally wrote: .."and the dumbass Steel Tarrifs...
Maybe I'm biased as I work in the Steel Industry, But if you look at the prices over the past 5 years of Black band and Cold Rolled products, vs. the ammount of tons imported from Europe AND costs related, there is NO WAY they can make and ship steel here for less than it costs for us to make it. DUMPING is the term! Pleanty to read about .....
APRIL'S RAINMAN 03-28-2002, 06:40 PM here is a fact for you as i see it . my wife and i are both military and have a STONG dislike to all clintonettes.
1. morals is not getting your knob sucked while your on my time.
2. a lot of people was killed during clintons regime because he did not have the balls and say no.
3. he can play hard ball against the oil cartel because he knows thier game .(we are still enjoying cheaper gas prices than we have in years.) california don't count!
4.at least he has done almost everything he has promised despite what the left wing faggots want.
5. when was the last time you served with a draft dodger as a president . i remember being in bosnia with signs hung up telling us to get our antimoral president out of thier civil war .
6.at least i know bush will not just send a bomb on an asprin factory and call it even after they kill our american hero's . hey i hear the diaper heads are recriuting why don't you ask !!:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
tail_lite 03-28-2002, 07:27 PM Nice job TyTy....... For ya' efforts, I won't give ya' an A, but I will invite ya' out to Cali and run the Hammerz and/or the 'con this year with us 'benders. I will even feed ya' and put ya' up at the house, unless u don't like BBQ'ed steak, chicken, etc. :D
Hows that ? :)

schuss 03-28-2002, 07:40 PM since most here seem to be of the rightward slant, I won't try to fight the losing battle. All I suggest is that you check out www.fair.org , it's a great nonbiased new site that really checks reality for you. They talk shit about both sides, so don't worry, it doesn't have the "liberal slant"
tail_lite...are we talkin about my trail efforts or the presidential debate?
hey, i figure the longer this thread stays up the better, let the presidential debate go on!
Aint nobody gonna convince me I would be better off with the democrats.

http://www.enjoythedrive.com/content/?id=8023
APRIL'S RAINMAN 03-28-2002, 08:53 PM now talk about liberal states .NH is becoming as bad as california.hell even adam and steve can get married. how is that for morals. :rainbow: :rainbow: :nuke: and you want to wake your yourself up go www.rushlimbaugh.com and he will see right through the bullsh*t. every liberal i met wants the goverment to give you somthing or more tax funded programs that don't work. i say screw uncle sam and get your money digging fingers out of my pocket!!
schuss 03-28-2002, 09:32 PM You see, there is no reason to bash gays at all. Just because they're different from you gives you no call to say that they are wrong. If you wheel a jeep and I wheel a suzuki, does that make me wrong? Seriously, live and let live, if it ain't hurtin' you don't make a stink about it. I'm tired of all this fucking discrimination. I'm not gay, but some of my family and friends are, and while I let the slurs slide (as they are a part of normal speech now, and don't really refer to gays anymore), the straight up discrimination I must take issue with. Rush has always been a blowhard, now is no different. If you just listen to one person, doesn't matter who it is, you will NEVER get the whole story.
APRIL'S RAINMAN 03-28-2002, 09:53 PM gay is as wrong as 2 boys f*cking in church and they don't deserve special rights because of this it .spreads disease and i will not let my kids think it is all right just because it is the new in thing or because people are affraid to speak out. if its wrong say its wrong.why should they get special favors . i 'm not about gay bashing but seeing it on tv everyday and seeing the way the world is oking it makes me mad . i don't care what you do in your own house but don't flaunt it or expect me to approve of it. have you ever seen someone die of aids i have ....it is a painfull way to go ...not to mention what it does to your family....and as far as rush goes he has been right on the money almost every damn time. i have been convinced of the liberal media ever since the last election with tom broka's face and him saying on national tv" i can't believe WE lost .ther was more that WE could have done..".after he had already told everyone that gore had won before the polls had even closed!
schuss 03-28-2002, 09:56 PM It's ok if you do not approve of homosexuality, just don't go pushing your views on others like many other people in the world. All most ask is that you do not persecute them. Just leave them alone and you won't have to deal with it. Now lets get this thread back on track to saving wheeling rights and convincing reps that we are responsible with out trails.
Dont make me get the Good Book!
Gay is wrong!
Period.
schuss 03-28-2002, 09:59 PM as I said......CAN WE GET THIS THREAD BACK ON TRACK?
APRIL'S RAINMAN 03-28-2002, 10:03 PM i don't understand why it is so hard to understand that homos is wrong. god intended to be adam and eve not adam and steve! when eve ate the forbidden fruit you must of got confused!
schuss 03-28-2002, 10:04 PM jeez......I won't argue here, as its clear neither of you will listen to a word I say.....

Uh... so does every Republican bro. How do you think that Dubya pays for the War Against Drugs (complete with Super Bowl commercials), federalizing airport employees, and proposing $100 million to promote marriage? It ain't coming out of HIS pocket!
Fortunately there ARE other choices. Make your voice heard and vote Libertarian (http://www.libertarian.org/).
And TyTy good job on writing the letters. The response you got looks like the response that I got from my Senator when I lived in Jersey and told him I was a member of the NRA, he responded that he wants to "regulate the firearms industry to see that you get a better product". Uh, right...
APRIL'S RAINMAN 03-28-2002, 10:18 PM i have sent in many letters to my home state rep's but i do not get a word back . i think they believe we are small in number so they don't mess with us but the truth is we out number the greenies 3to 1 but we can't seem get as orginized ...as much as we try. i am actually from Arizona and there are all kinds of good people using the trails even buissnesses use them for canyon tours but they continue to close us down and a few years later there is a developement going up ! it is all about the benjamins!!!it has nothing to do with conservation although it helps our cause . the higher ups it is about saving the land for future developments .

APRIL'S RAINMAN 03-28-2002, 11:04 PM your right it takes money to run ..its the nature of the beast.but its how they deal with the money. do they get bullied around like clinton ? or say "screw you thank you for suppoting my election but i don't believe it is in the best interest of my fellow country man!" the things that scare me is every year our taxes are higher never lower . and political correctness has gone way too far. and they are keeping us in the cities more and more ....hell i can't even hunt deer anymore unless you win on a lottery type system...when i was a kid my father and i used to hunt just for food on the table now its a luxury ! hell our permits are not even good for the year now just for the 1 week season and and have to redraw for the next season!:mad3:

But don't the Republicans try and tell you that they are for "Smaller Government"? The War Against Drugs is a joke, we spend millions each year and nothing has happened. I don't want to pay for it, if you do you should be able to donate to a cause instead of having the government take your money and do as they please. Honestly I am kind of on the fence about defense spending... Why are you so in favor of the War on Drugs?

I know that you were kidding but actually that IS how elections get won (JFK, Klinton, etc.).
Boggerdust 03-29-2002, 12:21 AM Back on track. Being a registered CA voter, I had to email that fence post walking senator. I asked that he help keep the public dunes open to the public, so that future generations can enjoy them as we have.
