1990 4x4 4-runner worked fine about a month ago then got harder and harder to get to work then stopped all together. it has the auto hubs.
the 4x4 light has been broken for a long time so i dont know if it turns on.
is this thing electric or vacuum.

It's vacuum related. Replace the auto hubs w/ some manuals and be done w/ it. When I pulled my buddy's auto hubs they had turned to powder:eek: .

what kind of hubs do i use. just ones off an older toy?

Try to find some OEM Aisin hubs from another IFS. Avoid the Warn Premium hubs, they suck big time. The nuts on the Warn hubs have a tendency to work loose, even with loctite and nylon inserts.

I owned an 89' 4Runner for years. Damn, I miss it!!
The factory auto hubs gave out on mine. Would not engage, clunking, etc.
Went with Warn Premiums. Ran them for 3 years till I sold the truck. Never had a lick of trouble with them. Go with a set of manual hubs and that should fix your problem.
