Hi, guys,
I'm considering rattle-canning my TJ olive-drab and was thinking of maybe just herculining the grille. Has anyone used herculiner for painting the exterior of the tub before? How does it hold up? Pics? Thanks.
Chris

I put Herculiner as my interior. I would reccomend putting Duraback for exterior. It is alot more grainer and more tough, it seems like it would be better and last longer. One of the memers of my 4x4 club has duraback. Duraback also has a green color that may match your olive-drab, that is what color my friend used on his.

I have used the Dupli-color bed liner from walmart, because you can paint over it. worked great, when i get my jeep ready for painting i think i will use bed liner on the whole thing. if its tough enough for a truck box then it should work great for the body also, plus scratches and chips should no longer be a problem. just my .02 worth good luck!! :)

Thanks for the reply. I herculined the inside of my TJ last summer and have been satisfied with it so far. By "grainer," do you mean the Durabak has a rougher finish? I haven't actually seen any up close before. Thanks.

Is there any special prep you have to do on it in order to paint over it? Thanks.

yeeah, duraback is way rougher. You can actually scrape body parts if you rub them against it too hard...... it's a good way to keep cats and small children from touching your jeep though. :D

There are 3-4 rigs around here that are linered inside and out. You really can't tell until you get right up next to them. I think drab green would be the ticket on a TJ too.

I would have it professionally done though, all of the kit jobs I have seen were not too impressive IMO but you already have some experience there.

I cant imagine using that stuff on the outside of my Jeep. Its not really stronmg and peals off with some abuse. If your gonna go bedliner stuff on the outside id go with a think coating of rhino or some strong stuff like that.

Also, for a grainy appearance, you can use some soft playground sand in the mixture.

I have Herculiner on the bottom parts of my rockers on my Explorer. I would say its pretty dang tough.

I have rubbed up against a few rocks and have not done anything that didn't also hurt the metal underneath.

if you do the prep work right herculiner won't peel off and is tough as nails, i covered the interior of my xj with it and for prep work i sanded everything with some VERY RUFF sand paper that just dug nice grooves in the paint And metal, then dusted it off and wiped everything down with xelen (sp) acouple times. hasn't peeled at all not even when i was bringing the axles for my YJ home i drug 3 d60's and a d44 across it all and that didn't peel it, although it did dent the floor in about a inch and a half where they sat :)
just dig some nice grooves in the paint and metal, clean it with the xelen stuff and you'll be good to go

then ya screwed up on the prep...mines going on four years and still stickin', faded to a flat black though...only top is a bikini. i recommend Herc for interiors, for the body it might be a bit too rough and a bear to clean, but thats a personal choice.

I have herculiner for the inside of my my rig and its ok...nothing fancy. If you scrape it with something or hit it hard it will peel. Mine is coming up in a few spots but it is easy to touch up.
I wouldn't use herculiner on the outside...I think it would be torn to pieces in a few runs, unless done very well with hours of prep work...Lots of rigs down here have rhino lined bodies and they look great and hold up really well...plus theres a life time warrenty...plus any color you want, and you can get designs sprayed with it...

What you guys haven't seen the avacado?

He did the inside and outside with green line-x. You can check it out at cherokee america at offroad.com.

Oh yeah and I herculined the entire interior of my xj, even the headliner. Why? I love that shit. It's messy as hell but once it's dried everything else just hoses out. I highly suggest it to anyone...and if you prep right and do a few thick coats that stuff will not peel off like said up above.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I'm undecided what to do about the front now, after the mixed response. I may just use spray paint to coat it black. Anyway, I'll post pics after the spray-bombing. Thanks.

had my interior Line-Xed, everything except the dash and it’s great, I don’t use a top of any kind and it has faded a little in the last 3 years but I’m really happy with it, my cj-7 is the factory Laredo brown and I had them tape up the front and spray it on like a “bra”, ya know with about 8 inches on the hood them coming across the ends of the front fenders also had my rockers sprayed up to almost 5” and across the rear corner panels. Also did my fenderwells, I did that because I just hate to hear rock bouce of my sheetmetal:mad:

Here in Arkansas the trails have lots of small trees and brush that you have to knock down and it’s held up great, no cracking or peeling so far.

Good luck with yours.

With herculiner the trick is either a sandblaster or a wire wheel for the prep to rough the surface .And after that is done throw some 36 grit on your belt sander and rough it up more . Then clean the heck out of it with Xylene and it will stick anywhere! I did my skidplate this way and it will wear away from abrasion but it does not peel off . And the reccomended way to add more texture is to order larger grain texture from Herculiner and stir it in .It is about double the size in graininess .Hope this helps .

there's a guy in our club who had his jeep painted w/ the bedliner, but it was yellow, looked really nice until the 1st time it saw mud, then it stained, but if your doin black or green it should be cool, his never peeled off or anything, but it was done professionaly, so a lot of prep time went into it

I myself have Line-X on the interior of my YJ, and have had no problems, other than finding a can of brake fluid had been spilled behind the rear seat, eating away the liner... it was repaired at no cost to myself. I also know of a person who did the entire exterior cab and flatbed of his Nissan hardbody P/U. He covered it in some pretty thick mud the first time he went out (I expected it to be very difficult to clean) and it cleaned out with no problems at the local "majic-wand" car wash...

These were both done professionally though...

I did my grill with the duplicolor spray can liner. It has held up well and has yet to scratch or chip or peel.

I was going to do the fronts of the fenders too, but I couldn't decide where to make the cut off line.I may do them this summer, they are getting pretty chipped up and dented.

Here is some shots of my red Herculined K5. I did the interior in black.
The good : Tough, doesn't crack when dented, easy to put on, hides poor body work and small dents.
The bad: Fades quickly, stains easily with mud, hard to clean.
