Well, after pestering the he#@ out of you all, I've decided what set up to go with my axles.

I'm swapping in a '78 RE Dana 44 from a F-250 that is now 5 lug. I'm going to run the Warn alloy shafts and Warn Premium hubs. Width will change from 66.75" wms to 62.9" and I am using the Warn waggy inner axles combined with Warn ford outers. Disc brakes. Anyone know of a better caliper than single piston ford style? I heard Lincoln calipers have about an 1" bigger psiton.....hmmm...

Rear will be a cut down J-4000 dana 60-2. Semi-floater, 5 on 5 1/2", 35 spline axle shafts. The rear is 65.175" llong and I'll cut the long side axle shaft to make the overall new width 62.0". Need to get a good disc brake set up; it's almost impossible to rebuild the old drums.

Both will have Detroits and 4.56's. Running Wood's CV with JB SYE in rear and Tom Wood's long travel d/s up front.

Avalanche Hi Steer set up.

Rubicon Express 7" long antiwrap spring pads, 1.5" SOA RE springs, and may keep a 1-2" body depending on height. Also considering doing it right and getting the MORE SRS.

Well, dreams do come true. Will happen in the next three weeks. Gears are getting installed now. I have all of the parts except the SOA springs, brake lines and the SRS. I'll get the tie rod and drag link once the 44 is bolted in. Gotta use math for that :D:mad:

Hello there.... let me know if you need some extra parts for the project. I have a somewhat large selection of Jeeps for the pic'n and only live an hour and a half away in southern MD. Currently I'm planting a 60 rear 44 front in an 81 CJ-5. 360/T-18/Dana20 combo. Good luck and keep us posted :D

I learned that one the hard way...too much firewater makes sawzall blade bend and cut into axle housing tube...yikes!

What are you fiddling with the 18 & 20 for? CJ or your XJ? If it's for the CJ, you wouldn't be removing a piece of junk T-176 that you would want to get rid of?

S&R: new hobby. We are into the Shannandoah Search and Rescue stuff. I love climbing, hiking, and you get to use your Jeep too. All around fun and you get to save lives. Bonus.
