Picked up a C4 for free from a guy at work. Said it's out of a 80 model ford pickup. Anyways, i'll be using it on my Explorer, change out bell housing with a C5. What options do i have with this? What was the stock tcase for these trannies. Only problem i have it room under the truck. I can't fit a monster case under there due to being a midsize.

well you can "make " any ford t case work under your midsize.
for practical purposes you want a eb d20 t case so you can twinstick it. worse comes to worse you can put the ranger type output shaft and extension housing to it and run a ranger type or your explorer t case.
you will need an eb case, eb outputshaft and eb extension housing on the trans, unless its already 4x4. but i dont think a c4 would come stock in a fullsize 4x4 without a d20 on it. and i never seen one in an 80.
2wd i see a lot.
if it has a 4x4 extension housing on it already count the splines on the output. if it is 25 it was probably out of a b2 or ranger if it is 28 it is probably ready for an eb dana 20 case.

I didnt know you could swap bell housings on the autos! Is it just the C4/5s?Cause I know you cant on a C6.

c4/c5 can swap from small 6 to small block, i have seen modified units that adapt to the 4 banger. but c3 usually goes behind the 4 bangers. the a4ld type swaps v6 cologne to v6 vulcan to 4 popper. theres later versions to the freak euro v8s.
the c6 is big block small block or diesel complete housings. and another freak size i seen. so no simple bell swap on those brutes. but there are alot of aftermarket adapters around now.
