: Utahs lift law Qs
mtndewmaniac 03-27-2002, 01:11 PM Has anyone heard what the current lift laws are for Utah?
When I was in Vernal in winter/spring 2001, the lift law was as folows; anything NOT fullsize, take trac-width, multiply it to wheelbase, then divide sum by 2000, that would be your maximum height.
Example, using Cherokee XJ figures, 101.4" (wheelbase) multiplied by 65" (trac-width), divided by 2000, equals 3.295" of legal lift. Unknown if oversized tires figured into final lift height or not.
Before I left on May 31st, 2001, there was a proposal to change, or amend, this law.
I would like to know, as I'm sure you do to, before Vernals RRCA in May comes up.:D
:flipoff2: Hey, it's an excuse to see my mommy and sis!:flipoff2:

StoopidMonkey 03-27-2002, 03:07 PM I cant remember off the top of my head but if your rig weighs less than 4500lbs your frame has to be no more than 24 inches off the ground. Thats taking the measurement from the lowest part of the frame, not including crossmembers or mounts. IF its 4500-6500 it can be 26" and it its greater then 6500lbs then 28"
rhills 03-27-2002, 04:16 PM Is this gross vehicle weight or actual weight?
Supergper 03-27-2002, 05:30 PM Gross vehicle weight...:D

RIGHT AWN! When I was in Vernal last year, I got to know a couple Utah Hwy. patrol officers, and they said that, to the best of their knowledge, this law was in the works. Sounds like it DID go through! Been surfing "utah.org," and there is SOOO much to thread through, my eyes hurt.
I will also check out wildyoats.com to get further info.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP:beer:

YEESSSSS! FAWK AN A!
That means my three inch lift (then) can go up another 9"(including tires of course). I am currently running 4 3/4" of lift, and I didn't want any hassles from the UHP. :flipoff2:
spencurai 03-28-2002, 08:15 AM if you are worried about your vehicle not passing the highway partrol test, and you live out of state, you can get an automobile exemption from the DMV. it does take some paperwork in advance but it can save you some grief with the HP when you flash them your exemption and tell them to FAWK OFF!!!:flipoff2: :flipoff2: when they cant do jack squat to you!!! i know of a couple of guys that have done this to be able to drive their rigs from out of state to the EJS in MOAB

Appreciate the info. They hassled me in Vernal the first week I was out there, Sept. 2000. But he let me go.
I had no idea about this exemption. I scoured the utah.gov site, and there was soooo much crap to read through, my eyes were shot.
Can this exemption be had through their website, by mail, or in person?

I didn't even think to try the word "exemption" on my searches. I'll give it a try and take from there.:D

Belly Dragger 03-29-2002, 12:45 PM Funny this should pop up again.
OK, I've talked to quite a few people in Utah. First I asked for my EXEMPT STATUS PERMIT and they said ok, what dates bucka bucka,,,,, One will be in the mail for you. Cool!
A couple of days ago I got a call from Utah and they said, "we don't issue exemptions anymore" WHAT! I politely asked about if this was a new law, and basically got th telephone two-step version of I'm too lazy and I don't want to issue you one.
OK, I thinking I'm going to be hugely fawked when I drive to Moab in May. Yeah I blew my wad and can't afford a trailer now, if you must know.
Not being one to give up easily I begin making phone calls again, DMV, Public Saftey (these are the people who issue the permits), Port of Entry and finally back to DMV. Bear in mind it's a quarter to 5 and I get this lady and I'm thinking oh no here we go again. So I tell her I want an Exempt Status Permit, she says "what's that?" oh oh. So I giver her the Utah codes and the code that directly addresses the permit. She says when are you going to be registering your vehicle in Utah, I say Never. She is confused as to why I need the permit and I tell her the tale of tales about the out of state 4wd and Utah troopers and local yokels issueing citations for Utah specific mandatory equipment/flares and flaps/lift laws. She was like "no-way", yes I say it's true. She says I like off roading and I go to Moab and like seeing all the built rigs. SWEET! So she talks to her supervisor and her supervisor say that Public Saftey has to issue the permits. I told her about my run around. She says she will call me back first thing in the morning.
Next day, first thing in the morning, no call. But a couple of hours later I get a call from a high muckety muck (I'll release names later) who wants to get clarification of what I'm asking. So I tell him about joe 4wheeler driving across Utah and get citations for mud flaps, fender flares lifts etc.... He is FLABERGASTED. He can not believe that the officers are citing out of staters for in state laws. I didn't even have to quote anything and he says, first off there has to be at least 3 laws on the books (Utah) that explicitly say that an out of state vehicle is EXEMPT from registration/mandatory equipment laws. Secondly it is against the US Constitution. Holy shit I'm thinking to myself I've got someone with a brain on the phone. He says he will look into this and make sure I get my permit. He also thinks that this is ridiculous as it is not necesary for me to carry a permit but obviously those on the streets are not fully aware. And here comes the good part. He also said that he will issue a Statewide memo to all law enforcement telling them that citing out of state vehicles for Utah specific laws in against Utah law AND if an officer cites an out of stater who elects to press violation of US Constitutional rights against the officer the State of Utah will offer no assistance to that officer!
Hooray for the home team! Today I got a couple more calls from Utah. Those in the upper management of Utah DMV and Public Saftey are floored that this is taking place and are now interested in rectifying this situation. On Tuesday I have an arrangement to speak with a near top officer in the Utah Highway Patrol.
I expect to have a final answer to this on Tuesday and hope to have my permit (albeit unncecesary) in hand shortly after that. Once I have plowed a road so that all out of staters can get these permits OR I see a copy of this offical memo notifying the patrolling officers of the legality of this, I will release all my resources so anyone with a desire can travel through or in Utah, unmolested.
