: Hy-Steer Setup!!!!!!!!!
Big DW 03-27-2002, 06:14 PM Who is running the Hy-Steer setup on their FJ40???? I'm planning to make my own arms...drag-link and tie-rod and use the FJ80 tie rod ends..the reason I am asking...is I need the length of the drag-link and the tie-rod...anybody willing to take the measurements for me?
Thanks
Big DW 03-27-2002, 09:02 PM Come On Man!
DCruiser138 03-27-2002, 09:34 PM why cant you measure your own? thats the best way then you know it will fit your specific rig and not "joe schmo's" rig...:rasta:
Big DW 03-27-2002, 09:59 PM I suppose ...now that I think of it...I could measure the tie-rod, that would be the same...but the drag link will be longer won't it??? :)
DCruiser138 03-27-2002, 10:07 PM what setup do you have now?...if you have a double arm setup...and arent changing your box location...it wont change i think.
Big DW 03-27-2002, 10:17 PM right now it is still SUA...the wooly mammoth will be doing the cut and turn on the front housing and I'm trying to get all of the pieces together for the SOA...will the stock drag link extend far enough to reach a hy-steer arm?:D
DCruiser138 03-27-2002, 10:30 PM yes...when i did soa with stock steering...i still had the same exact drag link as when i was sua...the ol mammoth's double arm was on the other end of that suka too! the only reason i have a new drag link now is cause i swaped to p/s. even so...you shoulnd have to change/lengthen anything.
Big DW 03-27-2002, 10:36 PM so I just need to clean up my existing drag-link and screw it out till it reaches? when I say hy-steer arm...I'm not refering to a double arm which is usual on a SOA conversion...I am refering to the type of arm that All Pro Off-road sells...both the tie-rod and drag-link bolt right next to each other...will it reach that type of arm or were you thinking of the double arm type?
DCruiser138 03-27-2002, 10:36 PM actually ya know what?...i had a thouhgt. the top arm of my double arm where the drag link mounts...is a little farther inset than the tie rod arm(the stock part). now...i dunno how far in/out the drag link mount on the histeer arms are...even though i won a set..i sold em lol. so someone with histeer may wanna double up awn this thouhg.:rasta:
Big DW 03-27-2002, 10:42 PM bummer...that's what I thought you were refering to...the double arm...I think I'll need to fab a new drag-link!
Thanks for the input!
What's up with this Dustin???????????
I also need to finish helping Dustin with his winch mount so that I can have him as my full time "Grinder Bitch"!!!
LOL!!!!:D
coiledbj42 03-28-2002, 03:58 AM with a double arm the drag link actually has to be wound all the way in and it just makes it. I would imagine that with hy steer arms the draglink should be long enough. Maybe it would be towards the end of the threads though.
You will just have to try it and fab one up if it doesnt reach!!
wngrog 03-28-2002, 04:14 AM You can fab your own steering arms and you can't turn the knuckles? That is like being able to drive before you can walk!
:flipoff2:
Good luck, post pictures when you finish....
Jason M 03-28-2002, 08:12 AM Yeah no kidding. I would be seriously dubious about making my steering arms if I could not cut and turn my own knuckles...
Are you planning on welding them or what?
I run OTT's hy steer arms. Beautiful craftmanship. Your stock draglink should easily be long enough. You will probably have to shorten it. It really will depend on which rod ends you are using, where you position your box and how long your steering arms/pittman arm is...
I can give you a measurment but it will not be accurate enough.
Build it and then measure the dam thing!!!
BTW, if you move the front axle forward it does get a bit tight in the room area. I even had extra short arms made....
Damn, that ram looks short! What is the stroke on that thing......4"?

Yep like I said, Short Arms...
And no, steering is not hard at all...
TLCObsession 03-28-2002, 09:01 AM My junk:
All Pro HySteer converted to 3/4" SAE ends, saginaw 76 box
TR 42"
DL 27.5"
Both measurements include the jam nuts
But as someone else said: build it then measure it.
If I had designed it, I would have shaped the arm to come back in at the end so that the longer arm (DL connection was not sticking out as far (and in my case rubbing the tire)
HTH,
Jim

--- hehe....i wouldnt trust my welds to a winch mount...not cool when one flys off:eek: . so as i come up with my winch mount ideas...i have the ol mammtoh weld it up...hes a really good welder:D :emb: !!! so in return..im his 1/4 eleptic bitch worker:flipoff2: :rasta:

Easy there big fella...I can fab a lot of things...I'm just not real clear on this caster angle stuff and pinion angles...BTW...the old Sheet metal shop I used to own has 175 ton Press Brake all computerized...break up 1/2" plate all day...12ft Cincinatti 1/8" shear...tons of welders...Iron worker--has punch---notcher---1/2"x12" plate shear...so yes there really is nothing that I can't fab. I just don't want to FAWK up the housing and have to buy a new one.:flipoff2:
Peace Out!
PS...thanks for the measurements TLCObsession!
Jason M 03-28-2002, 01:19 PM Housings are cheap and easy to cut and turn. Pinion should point right at the Tcase. Caster should be 4-6* back. It is really a piece of cake. Get a big ol pipe cutter and goto town!!!
Steering arms I would be careful with. I never have liked the idea of bending something to use as a steering arm...
Now if you were planning on using a milling machine...
Certianly post pics when you are done!!!

Jason is right. cutting & turning is really basic. you don't even need a pipe cutter. An angle grinder w/ a 1/8" blade is almost as quick & less prone to over cutting. A $5 angle finder from home depot will get you 1/4 degree accuracy & thats better than stock toyota.
As for the arms, let us know how they turn out & if you want, you could send a test set to me :D
