ya and what motor are you putting in it?
fatkid 09-03-2001, 02:47 PM I run 5.29's and a 4.16 T- case with 33's, it does fine. Although I find myself wanting to go lower at times because it just doesn't seem to have it. I can't imagine what 38's turn like, that 1.6 must have alot of stank on it. Does it?
poppycock 09-03-2001, 03:35 PM i'm already wanting to go lower. the klune is too much $$$ and they're aren't a whole lot of other options out there. that 6-1 grs3 thing would solve my troubles. i'll just have to wait and see how it does with the current setup and go from there.
it has a celica p.s. box and pump.
nutzack 09-03-2001, 04:27 PM HOw did the celica ps turn your 35's? Did it overheat or leak? WOuld u suggest your set up or IFS set up? I am gonna have 35 TSL-SX's and dont want to be having too much trouble with em. What do ya suggest?

As far as toyota steering... The IFS box is plenty strong enough to turn 38s
Chris Geiger and John Bundrant (All Pro) ran 36-37" tiress for quite a while before going to their new hydraulic assist setup.
I have a friend who ran 38s on his IFS(!) Yota for two years offroad. That thing lived on a steady diet of ball-joints and halfshafts, and he went through R&P gearsets like clockwork. But he never had a problem with the steering.
As long as the PS pump is up to it, go ahead with the Yota IFS box. Everyone in the Yota section running 36s-38s has an IFS box as far as I know. And with the lighter weight sammy, it should handle it fine.
Poppy... why don't you go find a beater Yota and throw the 2.4L 22RE, and a Yoota Tranny and twin-case setup in the Mini-Digger? Sure, the Yota engine doesn't pump out much more HP than a sammy engine, but it a helluva lot torquier than the sammy engines. (125 HP, 140 Lb.Ft.)
You have the length now, so wheelbase wouldn't be a concern. You might be able to find a tired 85-89 Yota round you fairly cheap and just yank thedrivetrain... It would probably be very happy under the lightweight Zuki.

poppycock 09-18-2001, 07:48 PM i have considerd that. i think it would be the best route to go. i really want to run the toy cases and tranny. and since i need an engine anyways, it would be the best way to go for sure! i'll figure out what the cost difference is and see if it's feasable. sure would be sweet. btw i'm stealing that mini-digger name. i likes it

Mini Digger!
Go ahead and use it... I sure as hell won't ever have anything I can use it on. I thought you might like that.
The Toyota drivetrain rocks. Just make sure you use an 85+ EFI engine, because while the carbs in the Toyotas may be better than some, they flood and stall on hills as much as any other carb. Make sure it's EFI, cause some of the 85s (and even some IFS 86+ toyotas) came with carbs.
That would be one sweet Sammy if you gets the Toy running gear under it. And you won't have to fetch parts off of all kinds of donor vehicles, or carry non-metric tools on the trail. I love that you can take apart pretty much a whole toyota with 10, 12, and 14mm sockets. Sammy's are probably the same, so that's another reason to use Toyota stuff.
My personal recommendation would be to look for an IFS Toyota. The 85s, with solid axles and EFI, are pricier than the IFS Yotas because most people know by now that that's the best year. The 86-89 IFS rigs are plentiful, cheaper, and they come with the steering box you'd need to do crossover steering - which would make sense since you'd have the Toyota steering pump now anyway. Also, you can take the front brake calipers off of the IFS rig, go buy some 82 FJ40 rotors form AutoZone, and boom! You now have vented disks on your front 8" axle.
Also, the IFS trucks have larger rear drum brakes, and the IFS rear axle is ~3" wider than the 80-85 rear axle - but you probably already knew that. Plus, you get spare axleshafts, R&P, and such for your toy axles if you can find a part truck Toyota to buy whole...

THAT bad? No... but if you're going to be offroading it you WILL be off-camber, then EFI rocks. I laid mine on it's side (about a 70 degree angle) and it puttered away for about 10 minutes till we winched it out. Of course, I would have had to shut it off if it wasn't getting oil... but still.
I've watched friends with carbed trucks stall out on a hill, back up, and have to hit it hard - so they'll get to the top before the engine starves. And this is a hill I just crawled up...
