How far, or how much of an angle can my stock straight drag link go before it becomes unsafe?

if you have an average 4" lift or less you can get away with the std link.

I have seen a few trucks with really flexy 3" lifts that bound up when flexing with the std link.

rather than spending cash on a lame drop draglink you should convert to cross link steering using an IFS steering box from an '86-94 4x4 truck.

Ya if I had the money for crossover steering I wouldn't be asking this questoin. 4 inches seems like way to much for the stock one, but either way it's ok because I just need it to take a 2.5 to 3 inch lift.

You can flip the ball on the j-arm to get a little more out of it.
