: Best exhaust exit location to get fumes away from vehicle on highway?

Where is the best tail pipe exit location to keep the fumes of the exhaust from coming back into the vehicle (top off) on the highway? I am getting a headache.

kinda vehicle specific, cuz ud underside and body aerodynamics

out the side, rear exhaust gets cought up in all the turbulance from you going forward. Just look at any factory pickup, all side exit.

Yeah, kinda what I figured. Just wondering if anyone had a general rule of thumb. I am currently trying to do a rear/side mount exiting behind the rear tire to get the exhaust into the tires turbulence. What about a down turn underthe vehicle?

I'm going against the grain here and say it all depends on the vehicle and exhaust size....I run mine out the back and keep it straight and free flowing...no problems even idling....currently mine exit near the springs in the rear and in clean air while driving.....

I think you want to avoid any fumes under the vehicle or at the rear. A side exit tucked up tight to the frame above the rear spring/forward of the rear shackle worked great on my FJ40. No fumes, no rocks.

alo remember though, every bend in the pipe causes increased back preasure and eats up horse. (not too much but something to think about if you're running a low horse engine)

Stacks work good, but then you would have to drive it. Also unless it's a pickup, I don't think you want the exhaust running thru the passenger area.

stacks....??!! that would be hideous on anything other than a backwoods pickup truck!!! IMO those things are ugly!!! but it would solve the problem of exhaust turbulence.........but damn, the ridicule factor on the trail, not to mention everyone laughing at you on the highway........:barf: :barf:

How did this turn out guys? Side exhaust better?

With the fall weather coming I am running top up on a YJ and am having problems with CO coming into the cab. Back window is up and the half doors windows are slightly open. Takes about an hour of driving to start feeling a little woozy.

Exhaust heads straight out the back beside the gas tank and turns down slightly before the rear bumper.

Is side the way to go???

Fix all the leaks in your hoopty ass exhaust and you will feel fine. 100% you have a cracked exhaust manifold

Why the fuck did you bump an 8 (EIGHT!) year old thread for this ?

Year and type of vehicle?

I'd look closely at the stock exit location if fumes are a concern. Side exit as mentioned, dumping out beyond the end of the tire, not behind. If you already have a side exit, get one of those cheesy chrome tips and set it to dump out a bit further, adjust until things are tolerable.

Underbody dumps will stink up the inside in stop and go traffic. Go beyond the tire, if you dump it behind the tire as I interpret what you want to do in your other message you'll have the same problem-Slow speed the fumes will be trapped by the wheel well, high speeds if its a newer vehicle will get sucked back toward the vehicle at the back. Just go for a 50-60mph drive down a wet gravel road and see where the muck ends up (rant: Whats up with manufacturers designing this wake now? I noticed this when I got my first new generation full size van at work, end up with the rear of the van coated by whatever I am driving through, lights, windows, everything top to bottom....I sure don't rememeber my old(er) vehicles doing this, yeah, they get dirty, but they don't become caked on to the same degree and usually the brake lights remained visible...) ie: http://www.flickr.com/photos/leadfoot1973/2332270998/ I cleaned the lights off on that phoyo, but you can see the entire backside is covered, yet the sides of the van are just coated from the tire tails. Any exhaust getting dumped under or behind the tires is going to get caught up on the back of the vehicle, at least in the case of the express/savanna.

I have a turn down right after the TC skid...no fumes even at a redlight. I don't see the issue.

Used that Handy search function

No holes in the body and the MANIFOLD is fine, no holes in the exhaust either, it is golden.

It is a 1988 YJ SOA with 37" irocs on 15X8's. Fairly common set up. I ended up getting rid of the little hoop going up and over the stock axle location as it wasn't really needed anymore.

I think I will give it a try with re-directing the pipe above the spring and behind the tire. I tend not to drive in stop and go traffic as it isn't a daily driver but it may be an issue on the trail. We'll have to see.

I hear ya about the rear getting covered, When the jeep was stock it wasn't half as bad, since lifting it up it has become worse, must be a lot of air passing below the truck now creating a whole new wind pattern.

Thanks for the help guys
