: Greasing CV U-joints? (cap mounted grease ports)

Trying to grease the 2 U-joints on my CV joint. They both have the grease ports (not nipples) on the caps themselves (rather then on the X). I bought one of those grease gun needles from autozone and tried using it and I don't think I am getting any grease in the joints. Also, the ball in the CV has a similar grease port. So, who carries a needle that actually works on these type of U-joints or knows of a better method. Would unscrewing the grease port do anything? Mine don't want to come out.

first make sure you're getting grease out of the tip, if not you found your problem.... while pushing straight into the center of the fitting, hold pressure and try squeezing. If the handle is moving, and the grease isn't squirting out all over, you're getting it in....if the fittings haven't been lubed in a while, sometimes the ball in the center of the fitting will get stuck, you might feel a "pop" as you try to pump under pressure...

I thought those caps were supposed to be taken off and replaced with a zirc. Glad i read this thread before i tried that stunt. I just have a normal grease gun. Where do i get the needle?

I've found that dropping the shafts is easier and you're able to see much better . Just my .02 worth .:flipoff2:

NAPA sells the needles if they have them in stock. Otherwise try idustrial suppliers. There are actually businesses that specialize in this stuff: Look in yellow pages under "Lubricating Devices & Systems" There are six places listed in Albuquerque book, and one of them is where I bought my needle.

Once you have the needle, you need to take great care to hit the center of the ball with it. With practice you can feel the spring behind the ball compress when you have it right. It really helps to put the needle on one of those mini-guns or a pneumatic gun, so that you can guide needle with one hand and pump with the other. Otherwise you end up needing to hold the gun with your middle hand.

You don't use a needle for those! There is an attachment for your gun that is about 3 inches long and has a cone shaped end that you press agains the fitting. The grease pressure pushes the ball in.

Look at the link below.

L2110 is what you want. It sounds like you are talking about L2100.

Ok so your saying you DONT use a needle for the low profile grease fitting? Then tell them to go get

GREASE ADAPTERS & EXTENSIONS #L2110

NEEDLE POINT GREASE COUPLER

Which btw way is both the correct tool (one of many different styles avalible) and a needle. I ASS U ME you were tying to say you do not use a needle like GREASE ADAPTERS & EXTENSIONS #L2100
GREASE INJECTOR NEEDLE 18-GA

which is used to insert grease into a rubber booted aplication.

related question:

Anyone know a source for those low profile fittings? I want to use them in various places where the std ones get broken off by rocks.

I've checked the local auto parts places, the Spicer catalog, and the internet (Google failed me for once:().

TIA

yes, that's what I'm saying. The local brand calls them an injector, not a needle. Plus what he was describing sounded like the pointy type needle, not the cone shaped one.

Try your local drive line shop. They will (should) have a spicer kit (or the like) full of fittings, large , small and lots in the middle. And as much as I hate to say this.. You might ry Napa, just be prepared to argue, as it will take either a very good counter person (I think they are only alloted one per state) or at least one who is willing to look through the catalogs with you.

Yeah, we are all talking about the same thing. Needle is probably the wrong word...I have a hypodermic needle thing too, but that is not what these fittings need.

Oh well there's the problem, I've never been a very good arguer.:) Guess I'll give it another shot...

Tip for CTM users:

Don't seat those (tapered needle style) low profile zerks into the caps of yer new CTMs until you slide the axel shaft assemblies through the knuckle. They might not go through unless you grind clearance bumps on the ID of the knuckle's circular shaft openings.
You might have to install the zerks AFTER sliding the shafts through your knuckles.
