OK, i'm swaping axles to my CJ i'm going from a D44/12B combo to D60/14B, but i was looking at the front and is very similar to the D44 i had, it have ball joins, the nuckles look the same, may be the shafts looks a bit thicker, but not much, this axles are from a 80's 1 ton chevy truck, and a got'em both fot $500 what i thing is a good price, but a was reading at the D60 article and it seams the this is not the rigth D60, at least it have no king pins, i'm not realy concerned cause i'm running only 35's, but me and my friends use to wheel hard, actually a broke the D44 shaft last ride, is this actually a D60 w/ball joins? how much abuse should it handle?

Thanks.

My guess is its a 10 bolt. All chevy 60's had kingpins. Only ford and Dodge (driver drop) 60's could be had in ball joint variety. Sorry to hear about it, man.

Yep, you only have a 10b or D44 in 3/4 ton. no stronger than the 1/2 ton unless the shafts were upgraded.

Thanks for the info,I didn't now that 8 luged D44 or 10B actually exists, anyway the pupkin look bigger than the 6 lugged D44, i have a locker in the 6 lugged, so it may fit into the 8? the 6 have 3.73 gears and the 8 have 4.11, any toughts?

Thanks

all 73-87 chevy 3/4 tons had either a 44 8 lug or a 10 bolt 8 lug. The break from the d44 was around 79-80-81 i believe. The only difference between those axles is that the outers are different, meaning the hubs, rotors, backings plates, and on some early 44 3/4 the spindles and stub shafts were different. If it doesnt have kingpins then it anit a 60.

D44 and 10 bolt share same spindles on 1/2t and 3/4t same count outter stub. hub are same. all you have to do is swap rotors and backing plate. Have done it.:)

i have both, so i have to chose wich one to install, the 10 bolts look's a bit bigger an it's definetly heavyer, but the 44 have a looker in it, but have a broken axle shaf also, does the 10B shaft fint into the 44?

Thanks

Inner axles are not same. pre 87 10 Bolt inner axles are 28 spline 88 to 91 inner axles are 30 spline. Dana 44 inner are 30 spline. Still they are not exchangeable. I had both not much diffrence between both diffs better off use 88 up 30 spline 10 Bolt or Dana 44 with axle up grade on either diffs.

If I remember correctly the 10 bolt is a slight bit stronger than the 44.

There is really not much difference in strength, but the open carrier will be less prone to breakage. Of course you lose the locker, which you may rather have and just go easy on the gas.
