Just bought a stalk 86 yota, Replaced Cap,Rotor,Wires,Spark Plugs, all parts purchased from the toyota dealership. I Cleaned the Carb. as well, (with help to make sure I did everything correctly.) Its a 4 cyl. and I getting about 17 miles to the gallon on average(before and after all of the work I've done). Any suggestions of possibilities of what else it is????

Please help, Thanks

That sounds about right for a carb version. The EFI can do a little better due to better fuel management. You might try running your tires a little over-inflated to decrease rolling resistance. The trade-off is that they will wear a little unevenly. You can also remove any extra weight you may be carrying uneccessarily. Not much you can beyond that. A truck is not the most aerodynamic thing to shove thru the air.

k&n air filter (drop in), fuel injector cleaner, change fluids (diff, engine)

You aren't saying anything about gearing, drivetrain, and tire size. I get about 24~26 mpg (corrected for tire size) on the highway with my '85 Toyota running manual transmission, manual hubs, stock gears, and BFG A/T 31" tires at 40 psi. Back in college I had a friend with a near identical truck getting high teens to low twenties with auto hubs and auto transmission.

it goes without saying autos eat more power..and thus more gas

Make sure EVERYTHING works as it should, including all the smog stuff.
Verify the vacuum and centrifical advance are working properly, if not then
fix or replace the distributer.
My rig is bone stock, all the sub-systems are in working order.
I get about 23mpg on the highway, with all California emissions hooked up and crappy California gas. (carb, 22R, 5spd, 4.88, 32's)

If it's an 86, you might have a worn engine. How many miles? did you check the compression? What kind of oil pressure? Inline 4 bangers are usually good for about 120,000 to 140,000 miles of normal driving before they start to loosen up. Changing fluids and ignition components is a little short of a rebuild.

if all is working correctly, i have heard that intakes and exhausts can increase mileage. but that dosnt seem to make sense to me becasue your pumping more air in and out, which would use more fuel, right? or is it only getting rid of the stock restrictions?

the reason headers and new intakes cause a decrease in mileage is because we want to feel that new power when we put the stuff on(foot to the floor). optimizing the exhaust is the first place to start

I've got 175K on my '85 - only internal work was timing chain replacement. Still gets 24~26 on the highway.

The big question is what he is running - tire size, gearing, transmission, hubs, etc. Without that it is just shots in the dark as to what he can do to help. For all we know, he's running stock gearing, auto hubs and transmission, and 35's.

52s? :flipoff2:

All I'm saying is that if he's running 33s or 35s with stock gears he's probably getting decent mileage for his setup. So he needs to give us some more information before we can say whether he can improve or what he could do to improve.
