I know some ppl don't have an issue on where to get materials for projects. But if you do, you can order whatever you need from Metal Mart (http://www.metalmart.com/index.htm). They ship UPS. They have a local place 20 minutes from where I live, so I didn't need to have anything delivered.

I picked up 2 feet of square tubing 3½ x 3½ x ¼ wall and a foot of ¼ x 3 flat stock for $25.

You may have to call them to get exactly what you want.

I AM NOT affiliated with this company in any way, shape, or form.

I would call around
The new structual steel ( angle, tube, pipe, flat bar, ect)
that i buy is about .35 cents a lb.
sounds high.
I don't know about the D.o.m. stuff

Welp...... I'm not complaing on the price that I paid. Every where else that I called here in the Ft. Worth area had minimum orders of 10+ feet. The scrap yards that I called, said I was more than welcome to dig through their piles. But they said it would be like trying to find a needle in a haystack for the 3½ x 3½ x ¼wall.

Hay man I know its far but you should look into Mckinney pipe and steel. Much cheaper and they are awsom people.
I picked up 4 sheets of 4x8' 16 gauge steele for 100.00 bucks
and they roughly average about a dollar a foot.
Know I do buy from them alot.

thanks for the info, NavyDood, their site is getting bookmarked for sure. ;) Some places it's easy to get metal, others (like here)it's not. Most of the places I've talked to don't even want to do small outside orders, just stick to big businesses and such. Anyway, I'm sure some people will use it.

I would check with some welding supply shops, if they don't sell the steel you need they can tell you who has the best deal in the area. I live near a shop called Pacific Welding Supply here in washington, they sell steel by the foot, minimum of 1 foot. it is much cheaper than the prices you mentioned. I rarely spend more than $20 there on steel at a time. I built my old flatbed for under $100 with steel from them.
