I’m in the middle of Hard wiring a wench into my rig, it is a Warn x8000I.
The question I have is if I purchase a new wench controller and cut the cord so that it plugs to go into the regulator, so that I can still use the other controller in front, there are 5 wires coming out of it. 2 power in, 2 power out, and 1 ground.
Is my thinking correct?

I think your are wondering about your winch, not your wench - only in rare cases do they have wires that need to be hooked up.

I think 1 is power, 1 is winch out, 1 is winch in. Not sure what the other 2 leads are for, maybe 2 for out and 2 for in? but it shouldn't be that much different 3 v/s 5 wires. See if the write up below helps out. I plan on doing this same mod. I got the momentary on SPDT toggle switch (ON)-OFF-(ON) from Lowes PN: GSW-117 Radio Shack didn't have any..weird.

I always have to laugh at the classified ads that state "8000 lb wench for sale..."
I know that some people are into fat chicks, but that is ridiculous!

5 wire remote, if you haven't found out yet.:D
I believe it is...
1/power
2/forward relays
3/reverse relays
4/motor ground
5/relay circuit grounding
All Warn did on the 5 wire, was put in a safety ground circuit.:grinpimp:
