View Full Version : locker selection question for Tacoma rear
Running a non-TRD Taco rear in my Jeep and it's far enough long in the build for a locker. I've always run selectable front and mechanical rear, so I'm sticking with what works for me.
So the question comes down to Powertrax No-Slip in the stock carrier or a Detroit. Is there any issue with the carrier not being up to the task like in some axles that would make me go straight to the Detroit?
This is a rig running a 4.3L and 35" tires with a 30-40:1 low and auto, so power isn't exactly an issue here. I just don't know enough about the history of these things to say for sure which way to go.

What size tires are you running on this axle? I think the 8.25" carrier is probably strong enough to hold up to a lunch-box. I'd put an aussie in it.

Yeah, sexy beast ain't it. But I'm still not running one of those back there :flipoff2:

35" Toyo now, 36" IROK's at the most.

EDIT: I take that back. No Aussie for the 8.25". They are really slow on the R&D.

That's the same as a lock rite or EZ locker anyway isn't it?

Stop jacking around and put a spool in it if you don't want an ARB.

Detroit that MF'er. You aren't running enough gearing, tire, or hard enough trails (it's a DD) to pop a rear toy shaft and kill a Detroit, so screw the lunchbox lockers.
I hated the lockright I ran in the rear with 33s. When I stepped up in tire size I threw a Detroit in there and got the backlash as tight as the factory spec would allow. Soooo much better.
I'm ARB F / Welded R now. Best setup ever - but not for a DD. :)
Wanna buy my lockright? It's in a scrapyard somewhere now, with the rest of the carrier. FYI, the overpriced powertrax is smoother than a lockright, but no stronger. Skip it. ;)

Detroit doesnt make a locker for the taco rear. What did you not like about your lockright, ive been running one for a few years on my DD, no complaints.

I second the spool, that or a lockright

Is this a DD? If it's not then run a spool. That is truly the most dependable set up ever.
But with your huge amount of choices you gave us:rolleyes: , I would go Lock Right. I know two guys that love thiers, (both in the back) and I use one in the front. One in a CJ, the other in a 88' Toyota.

yah, the Aussie is a lunchbox like a lock-rite. Uses the stock carrier.

detroit does now make a locker for the 8.25" part # 187S-199A
If I were you this is what I would run.
In my taco I ran a lockrite and 35"s for a couple years with no issues and now I'm running 37" mtrs and it is holding so far.:)
I think that the one piece bearing cap which minimizes gear deflection probably helps to keep the lockrite in one peice, but well find out.
If I break the lockrite I'll be going detroit.
Oh there is no spool made for the 8.4", unless you count welding it as spooled.

I don't own a Tacoma, and run V6 Mini-truck differentials. I just broke both of my Detroits, front and rear, within a month. Their first two trail rides. I replaced my V6 Lockrights with Detroits cause I thought they were stronger.
It seemed like every five or so axleshaft breaks, I would break the shear pins in th lockright, leaving me with a spool and needing $20 or replacement parts that they would send me for free.
My broken detroits (no power at all to one wheel, leaving me winching to get back to the main road) are so badly damaged that they can't be driven. Customer Service for Trachtech is a voicemailbox, and they won't return any calls from anyone. My *****'s R/P salesperson told me that Eaton has bought Trachtech, and has downgraded the customer service. So much in fact that they are not returning their calls at the moment.
Fact of the matter, the side couplers an a Toyota Detroit are ridiculously thin in a few spots, one shockload and these things are in a million pieces. Not to mention that a V6 lockright in a case with no wear, has less lash from forward to reverse than the detroit and I seem to only be able to break the shear pins.
I do have detroits in other appolications with no problems. My 9" and Dana 60 both have no problems with lots of abuse.

Extremely limited choices I know, but it's what' out there. Oh, I guess I did leave off the EZ/Lock Rite but hell even the Detroit is a new thing within the last couple of months. :shaking:
Nobody's spoken about busted carriers, so that's the most encouraging part :smokin:

you still havent said if its a DD. if not spool it. otherwise i would highly recommend an ARB. my friend has one and he drives his truck on the freeway at 70 no problem. with 37 inch tires. :D sketchy at the least, but fucking fun. especially with no doors.

I have a no-slip cause i got it for 300 new shipped and I love it. I am on 35's and wheel it hard regularly but I have a 2.7l so I don't put as much torque into it as v6 guys do but I thrash it none the less. It has held up great, no issues whatsoever and I have about 30k on it and over 3 dozen wheeling trips.
