: Correctly re-locating a GEMS ECU? Am I crazy?

Hey everyone,

We're pressing hard to get Big-ass done before the March LRL Magazine photo shoot and then shipping the pig to OZ. We just got the 4.6 in and lit! [Thanks PT, fawker's always right!] And are currently working on wiring and internal fit out.

After finishing the installation of four 450GPH bilge pumps, one at each corner of the rig front and rear on the floor we decided that we should look into relocating the ECU from under the hood. :grinpimp: I'm prepared cut and resolder each individual wire, all 70 to be exact to move it inside and up on the roof but I'm concerned it could cause running issues. I know of one other individual who extended a 14CUX and ended up with all kinds of weird little problems. Does anyone care to comment on this?

I think Scorpion sells a extension kit for Defenders w/ GEMS but I'm not sure if the connectors are the same as the Disco I. Can anyone confirm this?

As it stands are options are as follows:

1) Forget about moving it and pack it full of die-electric grease and our special military spooge and hope for the best.

2) Cut a big hole in the firewall and pull the existing harness w/ connectors inside and try to fit it behind the glove box.

3) Cut a small hole in the firewall re-wire the ECU and move it inside up on the roof line.

4) Purchase and extension kit if one is made.

We would prefer to move it inside with the extension kit but if one is not available we would cut and extend it ourselves. I just don't want to get fawked because the resistance is a tiny bit off or some shit. I'm no electrical engineer... Hell, I'm not even a mechanic. What the fawk am I doing? :flipoff2:

Any how, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I'm no mechanic either, but it seems to me that simpler is better. IMHO, FWIW, this would mean avoiding the creation of a whole new universe of potential electrical gremlins you'd have to try to track down in the middle of nowhere in 100+ degree heat. So:

(1) Pack it with dielectric grease and spooge

or

(2) Get ride of GEMS entirely by using a Series truck :flipoff2:

My D1's ECU is the passenger footwell, whether I keep the body or tube it, I'm gonna have that inside the roof - also the air flow meter will be on the A-pillar with a snorkle going back (3")...

Anyways, my call to you is to install a 100% sealable container (rubbermaid, military, Pelican, etc...) get that ECU inside there, run a breather, and that's that...it should hold PERFECTLY well...at night, open it up to let it dry IF anything comes in...

You can simply extend the wiring harness as long as you use good quality wire and materials.

That is all

I vote for the Scorpion cable!

They have already reinvented the wheel for you, you would need another ECU to cannibalize the connector to make your own extender cable, if you're not 100% confident of your soldering skills (and are willing to buy a coupla rolls of different colored wires to retain the OEM color-coding), etc, etc... The Scorpion would probably be the better wya to go.

Lastly, you're up to your necks in alligators and need to keep an eye on draining the swamp, not reinventing the wheel (that's my job :flipoff2:)

Glad you got it running!

This is exactly what I was originally going to do a couple of years ago. Much easier than relocating it.

Jason:
Go pull an ECU and the connectors from one of your parts trucks and AFI and I will set you up.

Hey Jason,

Unfortunatly the relocation kit is only available for TDI Defenders. SR has no plans on making one for GEMS anytime soon. :(
