I've got a 93 Explorer 4x4 that won't engage into 4wd. I can push the 4x4 button and it doesn't light up and I can put it in neutral and push 4LO and it doesn't light up either, and I don't hear any solenoids clicking or anything either.

I've checked the 20amp maxifuse under the hood and I can't see anything else in the owners manual pertaining to the 4wd system as far as fuses or relays. Maybe a bad push button switch?

BTW, weird thing is I started it up this morning and the 4x4 light was on when I started it, I hit the button and about 30 seconds later the light went off and I haven't been able to get it to come back on since.

Mom has one of these that has the same problem I have been trying to work out what the problem is for a couple of years. I know there is a control right behind the switch, then there is another in the back drivers side inside one of the panels . Then there is the electric motor inside the transfer case. All of which can be screwed up. If it was mine I would have converted to a manual set up, but it is moms.

dirty contacts inside of the 4wheel drive motor.you should be able to disassemble it and clean the contacts up witha pencil eraser.quick diagnosis would be to tap on the motor while somebody pushes button. if it engages then pull it apart and clean contacts.this is usually the case.

Thanks I have figured that is where the problem is, but did not know if there was any alternative to replacing the motor.
