So the good way is to have 46.125 in between my front hanger and my shackle near vertical? even if my spring isnt broke in? just put weight on it until I can get the shackle bolt in?

Listen to your heart, young Jedi. Actually, RS makes more sense and does less damage to the suspension while impacting the rocks. Them other suckas don't want to "spring" for extended driveshafts or break out some welding skills. Fangs are cool until they bend a spring or rip off a mount, not. But, on the other hand, 3-link spring over, that's the golden nipple. :smokin:

3 link spring over?

I'm still not sold on it. I dont want my tire moving out of the way of a rock I want to climb over. The only benefit I see of a RS is high speed road stuff. The pic just looks like shitty spring angle to me. I cant get the video of the scout rolling over cuz the front tire folded under during a steep descent out of my head.

I see the solid type of a link suspension similar to a shackle forward set up. Shackle moves forward applying tire force to the obstical. Solid link forces the tire to stay firm against the obstical(in a square edge climb type obstical) with the RS i picture the tire moving backwards, nose of the rig dropping from the tire movement, and the rear end having to push the front over the obstical. Just what im picturing in my mind.

What do I know, I'm just a stupid newb web wheeler:rolleyes:

Munchies
01-14-2006, 11:25 PM
Well do all the thousands of people with shackles in back roll over. I ahve a buddy with 44044's on a rear shackle, and I wouldnt have it any other way.

now that I look at it i think his are the same way
http://azwildcatoffroad.net/Pictures/Charleau%20Gap%2011-12-05/images/29.jpg

I think i need to adjust the rear back a bit, and the front forward a bit, my shackle will be wayy to big of an angle with weight on it. But it will turn the spring even more the way that it already is. I suppose moving the front will fix that.
I will adjust and re picture it up tomorrow.

Munchies
01-15-2006, 12:00 AM
SO i moved the fronts about an inch forward. more wheelbase, better approach. Easier trimming. Think it will be ok. Will post a picture

To level out the spring drill a hole in the frame and run the shackle bushing there instead of underneath the frame. It also makes it a lot easier to mount the front axle. You'll see what I mean about the front axle when you get to that point.

ih4ever
01-15-2006, 12:35 PM
well when a RS goes over a rock it is better then a standard mount, it allows the axle to move backwards and takes a lot of stress off of the suspension system all together, instead of the wheel being forced forward up and over the rock. when going down hill on a RS has it problems but, the few inches it has to move back isnt going to matter all that much, when driving down the road the RS is better for driving, since it relieves much of the front axle movement, and the force of the axle going forward.

RustoleumWhite
01-15-2006, 02:10 PM
O Boy!! A RS vs. FS debate. Where's my pop-corn. :D

A large spring angle (front eye higher than the rear eye) will lead to nose dive, but that's not really a big deal IMO. Stiffer spring or stiffer shocks will help. With the design of SII frames, its hard to avoid it when going RS with out "large" fangs. But it can be minimized with through-frame shackle and compromising on the front towers.

The flatter the springs also act different than higher-arched lift springs, so what one suspension and spring combo does is hard to translate to another.

As for a RS vs FS.... personal preference I would argue they both work just fine off-road. They each have there plus' and minus'. Personally I prefer RS's, although FS's are easier and cheaper.

Are those NEW 44044's?? Then I wouldn't move it forward *too* much, the spring still need to break in and they will settle, laying the shackle back some more.

Laying the shackle down will give you more motion in the ocean (droop), but will also add to nose dive. If I were to do mine again, I would make my shackles a little more upright (mine are through the frame, and layed back to the point that if I'm REALLY hard on them, they will just hit the frame).
