Who are you insured by and roughly how much? The agents around here are giving Matt the run-around saying they cannot offer liability insurance on the Mog.
The truck was at my house for awhile and after we got it running, it went to it's new home at Matt's house. He had temporary plates on it, got the title switched over, and passed Colorado emissions. Because of the insurance problems, the plates expired. Last night the city of Northglenn tagged it with a summons.
The truck is on private property, in the driveway, and is not a project vehicle. It technically was trespassing for the officer to verify the plates were expired but....Matt would rather not go down that road at this point. He needs an insurance agent that is aware of the Unimogs and can offer insurance within the next day or so. PM me if you are an agent, post up if you have an agent....
Thanks in advance

I have allied right now, I used to have allstate. Farmers should cover you as well. The key is not to tell them its a flat bed if it is. Just describe it as a mercedes pickup truck. Do not give any more info than you have to on the truck. Some insurance companies have put Unimogs on the black list, but their are still alot that will do it. You can also get antique insurance for much cheaper and get full coverage. I am switching to antique next week. My insurance from Allied is about 865 per truck, and my new antique will be about 235 per truck. Their are alot of companies that will insure you, you just have to ask around.
PS, last time I talked to progressive, they had it on the black list.
DUKGUY knows a good company I think.

$865 per truck???!!!! Dude, KC you need to call Bill Tobin at Farmers here in town. My 416 is only $106.11 a year. Talk to Rachel, she'll hook you up, just say UNIMOG to her.http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/images/smilies/smokin.gif

I use Safeco. It is registered as an antique and it cost like $35/month for full coverage. You think if I roll it down a hill it'll be covered?:flipoff2:

Insurance is a state by state issue, even within the same insurance company. AAA in CA no problem, AAA in XXXXX might not insure. The 2 biggest suggestions: K.C. is dead on the nose...supply only the basic information that is required to legally get your coverage. Military Surplus, Ex-military, Off-road beast :) etc., are not the words the insurance company wants to here. A Classic Mercedes Pickup similiar in Size to a Ford F150.......will probably do you better.
The second factor we see play a big part is whether or not the insurer is taking on ALL of your family vehicles. It is much easier for them to accept a mog along with the other 2-3 family vehicles, versus trying to get insurance on just the mog as your daily driver. It is not that common (although it has happened) for your insurance company to risk loosing your Homeowners policy, 3 cars, etc., etc., over a funny classic MBZ pickup.
I believe in Colorado it's about $5-10 to get a Non Op tag, then your local officers have no legal standing?
Watch the classic insurance companies especially if you think you are going to claim a rollover from the Rubicon trail. More than likely your coverage will be denied...(Fine print of J.C. Taylor and Hagerty, would both deny coverage last time I looked.)
Cheers,
Scott

A word to the wise: my insurance carrier for my Cruisers (Statefarm) has always wanted to see the vehilce before they put insurance on it, and they will often take pictures for their records.

Untill recently, I have never had to do more than give my insurance company the vin# to the truck. Now, with my new antique insurance, they wanted to get photos. If you getting full coverage, that might be why they are so nosey

I have my 416 DoKa insured on my classic policy with Hagerty. Cost is about $250/yr for a truck worth a hell-of-a-lot more then any 404.
I don't care if they insure against a trail screw-up (if I break my rig, I should be required to fix it). Proof of insurance cards are required in this state so all I wanted was a card to show the pesky patrol officiers who always seem to stop my truck for no other reason then to look at it - a-holes...

Hagerty seems to be a universal good carrier. But my new insurance which shuold be online soon is going to be $230 a year for two 404's One truck worth about 7-8K and the doka is worth about 20K
oh, and thats full coverage.

..sounds about the same. I think my "agreed value" with Hagerty is around $28K.
Classic coverage is the way to go with these things ! Send 'em a picture, swear it isn't used in commercial service and away you go !

I GOT INSURANCE!!
If some of you guys remember I was going to have to sell my unimog because I could not get it insured. Well I am happy to say that I got insurance from geiko (SP?) for $391 every 6 months. That is registered as a regular truck and in a few months I will move over to antique insurance, which will be much cheaper.
It is listed as a Mercedes pickup.
the dream is still alive!!!

I just signed on with Esurance for all my cars and when I added the CASE Unimog today it was only $133 more for 6 months. Just gave them the VIN # and told them it was MB model 406 truck. I never use the "U" word with any insureance co. Von
