The lift pump in my truck is going out, again. This makes the 3rd in 30,000 miles. I want to do something to fix the problem permanently. What is the best option? I did some digging the last time the pump went out and never found anything I really liked so I just went with another stocker. I want to find a better solution this time around.

The FASS system gets alot of hype but I've seen a couple trucks with them installed and I have no desire to have something hanging down that low off the frame rails, I am on construction sites all day and it wouldn't last long. Not to mention I noticed several reports of failures and high pressure readings with the FASS in the limited researching I did. I've seen the belt driven pump and it seems way too involved and expensive. I also came across several people who ran piggy back systems with bypass valves and all sorts of complicated plumbing, again too involved and expensive. Is there no easy, reliable solution? I simply want something that will work at the pressures Cummins intended and not be a routine maintenance item. Is there and aftermarket pump that could be mounted to the frame rail while retaining the stock fuel filter?

You might want to take a look at the Big Line and pump relocation kits from http://www.vulcanperformance.com.

The other thing that may be an issue is crud in the tank. The lift pump is pre-filter, so anything in the bottom of the tank will get sucked right through the pump.

I bought a used 99 CTD a little under 2 years ago, and I've already put 2 lift pumps in it. First replacement lasted 17,000 miles. I think I'm going to get one of the above relo kits and give that a try, as well as dropping the tank and giving a good cleaning.

I haven't looked at an installed FASS, so I have no idea how far down they hang. I'm not a fan of the RASP, you do retain the electric pump, and it needs to run to get initial pressure to the lift pump before it cranks. Other than that, I don't see it as being an overly complicated system.

The relocation kit is a good idea but I'm still stuck with a stock pump, even mounted off the engine and pushing fuel as it was meant to I don't trust it, not after replacing them so frequently the first 30,000 miles. Surely someone makes a quality electirc pump that can put out 15 psi and is safe for diesel? Not to mention that buying that kit and a new pump would set me back ~$300, I'd rather put that kind of money towards a better setup.

the only other option ive seen is getting a new cam with an ecentric(sp) for a manual pump like the 12 valves have

My FASS is not mounted on the frame rails, and uses the stock filter. Its mounted on one of the bed supports, its about the hieght of the top of the gas tank. That's where the instructions showed to mount it. All I got was the pump, not there filter and air/water seperator. So far i'm happy with it.

I must just be lucky... My truck's (98.5) lift pump lasted to 80k and even then it was still at 5psi WOT... The carter replacement in the factory spot runs 15+ psi idle and I can only suck it down to 12psi WOT... It's been supplying the +120hp sticks and comp for the last 30k... Did I metion this was on the original VP44 without running conditioner... I've supposedly got the worst model for lift pump and VP44 failures... ???

I hope you're knocking on wood.... :D

I have a 7 PSI carter pusher pump mounted just below the tank. I've run this setup for over 70K miles and I'm still showing 15-17 PSI at idle.
