I just picked up a used On One single speed frame. The plan is to build it farely cheap. Mostly with parts from another bike and parts lying around. So far it's consist of a King headset, Fox fork, thompson stem, XTR V's, levers and front hub, Sun 0* XC rims, Pauls rear hub. Cranks are still up in the air.

Sounds like a fun bike. I have a single speed wheel set if you need one.
Where do you ride?

I'm slowly getting back into it. Went to the Gap yesterday on my full sup. It was slippery. How much do you want for the wheel?

I've been riding for years but I don't get the SS trend - whats the deal?
Weight savings for CC?

Most people don't get the single speed deal. It definately isn't for weight savings although I guess that is a by-product. SS bikes are perfectly silent because there is no derailure, chain slap going over rough shit, or gear shifting. There is also almost 0 maintnence on the drivetrain compared to a multispeed bike. also it makes the whole thing a lot simpler so there is less to break. I knocked SS for a while but after snapping two derailers in one month, and having my gears skip all the time it was an easy choice and i'm happy I did

I think there's has been a lot of ppl who get into SS just cause it's something new on a rise  :flipoff2:
the rest of us, found that riding xc trails in big ring and half way down the cog is a waste of equipment:D after riding for so many years, having 27 gears to choose from is just way too much....You only need ONE:smokin:
plus it's such a blast blowing by xc gearies on uphills on a SS :flipoff2:

one is all you need

Weight savings is a factor. Every 12oz. I save by riding with a one speed drivetrain is another can of Budweiser I can stuff into my jersey pockets.

factiod: up until 1937 the tour de france was raced on single speed bicycles with really big balloon type tires. true fact, in 1937 they went to two speeds.

talk about a tough one speed race! those mutha's rode alot of the same mountain courses that they still do today.

what I really like about riding a one speed is riding with one or more friends who are also riding a one speed. its alot of fun that way!

Just picked up a Redline Monocog frame and Fox Fork with sime misc. parts and pieces. Prob make it rigid and run the Fox on my current SS.

Less work?? Well, ,maybe if its setup correct from the start. Overall I think I have had more fun on my SS than a geared bike. But it has to be hartail, and maybe required to drink a nice beer when you get done. That's just me, when its fun to watch someone 150 lbs climb like a goat, its even better when my fat ass is on thier back wheel with one cog turning.

48" gear (or thereabouts) if youre not fit and have pretty good climbs (not a 46").

50" gear (or thereabouts) if your in okay shape and dont have that much steep climbing.

52" gear (or thereabouts) if you are fit and have good power & and like to power climb.

make sure you set up with a rear tire with alot of scoop and hookup and if you're running a rigid fork, a larger profile front tire with ample track and bounce and you're set.

PS- 25th hour was a kick ass movie?
