The axles bolt in the same, BUT some were high pinion and some weren't (the earlier the rig, the more likely it's a standard pinion). They were kind of mix and match '87 to '90 and then they went all high pinion AFAIK. The front axle between XJ, MJ, ZJ and TJ will swap. Rear is different in all of them. (but can be made to fit.

All MJ's and XJ's up from 84 to 96 all used the same HP30 housing and mounts, some brak e differences and gearing differences where used. 97 to 01 xj's where the only low pinon years

XJ and MJ are identical up until 97 HP30 that is....84 to 90 had vaccum disconnect housing...except for the limited package which used full time 242 case..91 to 96 are HP no disconnect.....then they change low pinion tj housings....All TJis are low pinion dont use those....

MJ went away after '91. My '87 Comanche has a stock low pinion front diff. (Vacuum disconnect)

i was looking at the rubicon express website and saw the tj bracket kit. does it come with all the mounts including track bar? i could mock up with the d30 and put the mount kit on a waggy 44 if so

The TJ bracket kit RE sells will work fine on an XJ or MJ, all the brackets are the same. Here's a link to some pictures of my wagoneer 44 build-up with RE brackets: http://www.poseycanyon.com/mjohnston/041005/, http://www.poseycanyon.com/mjohnston/041605/ and http://www.poseycanyon.com/mjohnston/041705/

would you recommend a built 30 or a stock 44. if i buy the 44 and the bracket kit that will tie up funds for a while. i could just get the 30 and put it in for mock up/2wd until i get the 44 done...

It's up to you, depends on what size tires you're running. If I had it to do over again, I would've waited for a high pinion 44 to do all this work to. The 30 can handle 35's easy enough if you run 297x shafts out of a later model rig or a TJ, stay out of the skinny pedal, and carry spares... adding a locker you might start to get into trouble, but lots of people do it.

I'm running 36's, but I like my 44 for more reasons than shaft strength over the 30... lockout hubs, better ball joints, serviceable wheel bearings, stronger housing, better locker choices (I have a detroit in mine), just to name a few. Some argue that the HP 30 ring and pinion is about as strong as a low pinion 44, so take that into consideration too.

Oh yeah, you sure that's the stock axle in your MJ Jim? Never seen an XJ/MJ earlier than 2000 with a low pinion 30, only TJ's and YJ's.

It came out of an '84 XJ with 4 cyl and NP229 and it's also vacuum shift. How late did they run those? (I don't see a button here for me to post the pic)
