: steering box ISSUES!

my steering box has 1/8th - 1/4 turn of slop @ the input, the adjuster nut/screw will not take any slop out of it, and the box pulses in and out when steering... it's kind of scary when drivng at freeway speeds!

SeaBass, will the Sagina bolt right in or are there some serious mods needed to make it work? I saw a thread recently saying that the Saginaws arms swing differently than the IFS box?
thanks

no bolt in, you just need to find the right box. I was told mine is from an el camino, it has 4 bolts others have 3. stronger? I saw the box on a 82 up camaro, looks right, take a look around the JY's cheap boxes. I'm pretty light[sammi] but I have the 4.3 and with aired down 16/35 boggers in 4 low low> it turns with 1 finger! I can't see needing hydro on mine, but I have not had it in the box with a locker in front[open now]

Do you have a pic of how it is mounted? Similar to an IFS I assume? I am somewhat interested if it will mount the same way as the IFS will......might be easier (and cheaper) to find.

Hey seabass.......saginaw boxes mount on the inside of the frame.........ifs toys mount on the outside..........His easiest option would be a 2wd F/S chevy pickup box.:flipoff2:

I was wondering about this. A "G" van's steering box mounts on the outside of the frame and looks awfully similar to the Toyota IFS box. I haven't done any measurements just bone head, I mean, yard observation. Would this work?

Even though you do not have IFS you still have a torsion bar in your truck.. in the steering box
The reason you have all the slop on the input is the torsion bar that usually smoothes out the steering input to the vanes and disc's of the assist valving has snapped and you are basically moving the disc with the two tabs that are there for emergency (redundancy)

You do not have to get rid of the already tapped box though.... just swap the guts from another box into the one that is tapped..... Just pull the top cap/ sector shaft out first. then pull the rack/ worm and ball-nut as an assembly (unwind it and be prepared to catch a whole lotta ball bearings...)
