: Flushing a Torque converter.

I picked up a C4 torque converter from a 79 F150, however the tranny was shot, lots of silvery stuff in the fluid. I need it for a 5.0L to C4 conversion, my C4 had the smaller 10.5” bolt pattern.

So, How do I flush this torque converter outside the tranny?

id toss it if it were me. its not worth the risk to use a t/c thats had water or tranny metal flakes in it. there is just not a good way to flush it out.

prolly not what you wanna hear, but junk it and buy a brand new one,and make sure the one you get has a drian plug. having a drain plug on the t/c has definately prolongedn the life of mine. its worth a few extra $$ or a couple extra days if they gotta build it or order it to have the drain plug,IMO.

WHAT?! $225 for a convertor?

that a factory replacement,or somethin from summit?

what tranny does it have? ive bought 904 and 727 convertors for less than $100. my 727 convertor was ony like $49 for a cheap mamco factory low stall with drainplug. never priced a th400 convertor, tho,if its that...

at any rate, water in the auto tranny was one of the biggest reasons for swapping in a t18. :) i love the water too much to stay out of it,and it gets old droppin the pan and drainin the tranny and convertor ,and blowin out all the lines, so that the water dont kill it before the weekends over

make up your mind, is it c-4 or c-5??
anyway, stock replacement from a tranny shop or auto house should run about $50, thats what they cost here.

Thanks for the info. It's a C4.

How do you tell if it had water in the fluid? I didn't look like a milk shake, which my diff oil looks like with water.

Isn't the inside solid metal? So then why couldn't I flush it?

With that said, if it's less than $75 for a stock replacement or a re-build of my I'll jump on it.

if it has a drain plug, you could prolly flush it. otherwise, the only inlet/outlet is on the top and inthe middle. its next to impossible to get all the contaminates out with this setup.

i had my old nondrain plug convertor cut apart after the tranny quit working in a mudhole, and you would not belive the funk i found in the bottom. all that stuff could ever make its way out past all the fins by dumpig fluidin the hole, swirlig it around, then trying to dump it back out the top.

and yes,the fluid will look like a strawberry shake if its had water in it :)

Talk to a local tranny shop. Odds are they can "spin" flush it.
Local shop here only chages $15 to flush a convertor.

What I was told when I had one done was they drill and tap a hole in the TC then put it in a machine that spins it at a high RPM as they flush solvent through it. You'll get it back with a nice brass plug in it and a balancing weight welded to the opposit side.

It does have a drain plug. But it's not at the absolute bottom.

I'll try some local tranny shops and see if I can find someone to spin flush it.

But how do you tell if the inside is rusted or not?

Thanks agian for your help guys. :D
