I've been looking for a sammy for a long time...
& now just got one...
Its an '87 with a SOA conversion already installed running Brand new 31" M/T's..
I know their new because I drove it to the Tire store to get the tires put on after the lift was done..
I got this Sammy from a friend of mine..:D
& its just been smogged
So I know how it runs & all that good stuff..
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/268179/fullsize/Nov21_008.jpg

So I was wondering if you guys can tell me about some Cheap parts That would help it out some...
Its COMPLETELY STOCK except for the lift & tires...

I'd like some sort of cage & lockers..
But I dont want to spend much money, Thats a big part of why I went with a Sammy in the 1st place..

Congratulations, I know you've been looking for one for a while now. It looks like a good platform to start with. Cheapest place for Lock Rites seems to be Rocky Roads on Ebay @ $172 each. Shop around this board and other for a lower T case gears, shop for some Track/Kick 5.12's, and if you find a used cage cheap grab it. Otherwise I would suggest that you hook up with some of the other sammy guys in your area with a bender and go to town and make your own. I have a bender but I'm a little far from you to make it convenient to run back and forth. I do have a cage that you can take a look at. If you like it you can copy it. If you need help tracking stuff down let me know.

Yeah I remember you..
How ya been?

Lock-rites? Those are'nt lockers are they? Limited slip maybe?
Whats the factory gear ratio.
I will switch gears when adding lockers . But I do want this to be freeway friendly..

I do plan on Driving to & from my wheeling trips..
& what about power increase's...?
simple improvements that dont cost much?

lock-rites are lockers. LSDs cost a lot only Calmini makes them.factory gears in the diffs are 3.73 some 4.62s from a tracker would help ya out ;)

So are lock-rites kinda like a detroit locker?
& how would Front & rear lock-rites work on the street?
Is that a Bad idea?
I currently have a Detroit in my Bronco & DONT like it, on the freeway it pushes 7 pulls me left & right as it ingages 7 disingages..:shaking:

& what gears have you found to be freeway friendly.?
I'm fine with not driving over 65 mph...

Nice clean Sammi and welcome to the Sammi Owners Club :D. I noticed quite a bit of power increase with a Calmini Header. Also I've got 4:16's in the tcase which seem to work great, I can pull 5th gear on the highway and I have 31's as well. Also since your helpin exhaust get out, help air get in and get a K&N in your airbox. Exhaust is a big helper too, get a high-flow cat and nice muffler and it gives ya some power and some noise as well. I had a lock-right in the rear till it blew and I just switched out 3rd's with one I had welded up, holdin up fine at the moment *knock on wood* minimal extra tire wear and makes my leaf spring bushings a lil squeaky with the bind it puts back there. Good luck! -David-

If you don't like a detroit in a bronco you're going to hate a lock rite in the rear of a sammy. You said you wanted it cheap so I recommended a lock rite, if you want it to drive nice you need an ARB - but those are expensive. You can't have it both ways buddy. I would suggest 4.62 gears and a lock rite in the front only to start with. It isn't a perfect setup but will accomplish what you want to do for little money.

That's like a blank canvas, the possabilities are endless. If it's not a rust bucket, don't make it into another tube buggy. IMHO

The header and carb is not legal in Cali. But a friend with a stock sammi can help every two years.

I can imagine it would push the Sammy around even more than a Heavy Bronco Huh?
Do I have Open Diffs from the factory or are they at least Limited slip/Posi ?

I changed up my Exhaust system today..:D
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/287267/fullsize/IMG_3354.JPG
I put a Turbo Muffler & side exhaust.
It does sound better even tho I would prefered it be a little louder..
But it does have some slightly more power ..:grinpimp:

Nice Samurai. I wish my interior was that clean... actually it might be if I could ever get all that mud cleaned out from playing this weekend with my doors off. I noticed your exhaust and how it exits. It would be fine on my Sammi cause my tires are so big enough that I've never got that close to high centering to effect it. NW Arkansas is no Moab, but we do have some good rocks here.

Then again I'm not so much into Rocks..http://bestsmileys.com/clueless/7.gif

Can any of you guys help me find a Big metal box that would fit in place of the back seat That I can lock so I have a trunk?
I'm figuring if I ever do roll this thing I dont want stuff flying out all over over the Place , & the fact that I plan on taking the doors & top off as soon as the weather gets better.

I've seen this thing called a jeep box but they stopped making them for the Sammy about 2 years ago.

I have a center force clutch with the puck style friction disk, just pulled out of a running sammi, looks like it has a couple thousand miles on it. it grabbed great, might want to look into one till you get t-case gears.

I had detroits in my stock axles on 33s, and it drove fine on the street. The only time you noticed them was once in a while they would pop when turning a corner.

Good thing you're not into rocks much. With all that Armor-All on your tires you wouldn't get far:barf:

When you start getting headaches you'll want to move the exhaust back to the factory location at the rear and to the side.
