I installed my EGT sensor in the elbow right off the turbo in my 96 Dodge CTD. I pulled Altamont Pass with my new 5'er at 60 mph. I was running a steady 1,100 degrees. Tonight my friend let me know that the probe should be mounted in the exhaust manifold before the turbo. He says if it is not placed there (ex. manifold) that I will get a false reading that is approx 300 degrees colder than the true temp. If this is true, I was running well over 1,250 degrees.

What do you think? Where is yours installed and have you possibly tried both locations?

I was originally going to install it in the manifold but my probe is too long and it will bottom in the manifold before it seats. I am running Auto Meter's Phantom Pyrometer.

Thanks for the opinions and advice.

Yep, your friend is right. You DEFINATELY want to reinstall that in the manifold. There is a divider wall in the manifold where it comes together to go into the turbo so make sure uoi offset it to one side a little.

You definitely want to talk to your vendor if that probe is THAT long to get a shorter probe. It shouldn't be a problem, Gen1 CTDs are pretty well known. The probe tip should be close to centered in the exhaust stream.

ASTAR is right, you really want that probe pre-turbo. You're probably cooking parts.

If you go to PDR's website you will find the measurements on where to drill the hole pre-turbo

I did the same thing on my 97 CTD. I moved the probe to the manifold and EGT readings went up about 200 deg.

Pre-turbo is best.

A tip for drilling the hole without removing the manifold. In order to avoid having the drilling debris fall into the manifold where it will be ingested by the turbo and may cause damage.

Dab grease onto the spot you are drilling, reapply as needed. The drilling shavings get caught in the grease, and every so often you remove the drill bit, wipe clean, dab some grease and continue drilling.

HTH.

Well, Auto Meter now has a cure for the long probe on their pyrometer. They have been getting a few calls about the probe being too long to fit into the exhaust manifold on the CTD.
It is a steel fitting, 1/8" pipe to 1/4" compression fitting. It makes the length totally adjustable.
So into the manifold it goes. :D

Thanks! Don
