: looking for a tire/carrier bumper that...
jjnord 01-18-2006, 09:47 AM Hello,
I hope to pick your brains!:rainbow: question, I know; but I tired of searching and hope someone might already know.
I'm looking for a rear bumper/tire carrier that MUST fit my needs...
-can carry a 36" tire
-Hi Lift mounts
-Jerry Can mounts
-2" reciever
-D rings
-and the hard part...carries the tire up a bit high
I want to be able too use my winch on a muli-mount on the rear too. Problem is the tire is too big and doesn't leave enough room for the winch to fit. I thought of a 'drop reciever' but I think I might run into ground clearance issue.
thanks in advance,
jjnord

erok4 01-18-2006, 11:52 AM Have you seen the ones from cassidy's customs (http://www.cassidyscustom.com/tirecarriers.html)
I am not sure if they have jerry can mounts but I would bet that he would do that
butch6924 01-18-2006, 12:08 PM Have you joined a local club yet?
Here in MO there are 5 or 6 shade tree fabricators that build bumpers dirt cheap. In most cases, they don't charge much more than the cost of materials. Also, they will build exactly what you want exactly how you want and offer input where they can improve on your idea. Plus, your set up will be completely unique and serve your purposes exactly the way you want it to.
FWIW, that's where I started. I saved a ton of cash and would recommend that anyone who needs a bolt on bumper start there.

Not to say any of the other's are bad but for the money this is the best way IMO...

Can you find a bumper that meets all of your requirments except for the "high mount" tire carrier, cut the actual mount that the tire bolts to and reweld it up at the height you need?
That's what I did for my (tailgate mounted) tire carrier. Cut the stock mount in half, added some plate steel, and rewelded it up about 4 inches.
Took like 1/2 an hour and less than 10 bucks in materials.
ogreshooter 01-18-2006, 04:53 PM Another vote for the shade tree fabricator. I will be into mine for less than $110. That includes the spindle. Got it at a local traile shop for about $30. Join a club and see what happens.
jjnord 01-19-2006, 12:56 AM Alright. Just an update...
I went ahead and bought one. It's the LOD / 4x4xplor.com unit.
I know the wait is going to be hella long, but the price and quailty is unbeatable from what I've seen.

BTW, I'm in a club; actually I'm the Pres. this year. I just didn't feel comfortable asking another member to go that far out of their way and take up there free time.:shaking:
jjnord 01-19-2006, 01:05 AM BTW, kinda interesting...
Did you guys know that Sears sells Warn?
They have front bumpers, rear bumpers, tire carriers, rock rails, winches, winch acc., and hub conversion with all said to be in stock:eek:
Crazy. I never would have thought that.
There prices are good too. I fact, they will price match and do a 10% of the difference too. Right now they are also doing a full rebate on shipping cost. I was really close to getting one there instead.
desertsport 01-19-2006, 03:43 PM What about OR-Fab. I have there tire carrier, IMO best money spent. check them out .Holds high lift, 2 jerry cans up to 38 tire and does a few other things. best part is it dosent rattle.
rustedJeep 01-19-2006, 04:15 PM For the price of one of those bumpers you could buy a welder, materials for two bumpers, and have a new hobby. It is up to you, if you like to or want to make that kind of stuff dig in and start somewhere. If you don't like to get your hands dirty, they get out the CC.
My used AC/DC arc welder was $120, for around $100-$150 you would have your materials. Then spend every night for a few weeks out practicing your welding until you feel good enough to weld your own bumper.

Well I actually know how to weld some, and could do it. These carriers are actually pretty easy to do. Big problem is time. We I was younger free/spare time way no problem. Hell, I didn't have any idea just how much I had; didn't seem like it at the time. Working 50hrs a week, finishing off a M.B.A. degree, a 3yr girl & 13mo boy, Pres. of local Cal4Wheel club=NO free/spare time:
I know, I know crybaby: right? :flipoff2:

Something to try for your club. Ours started a "fix-a-rig" event as a club function. We meet at a designated persons house and fix our junk or build something new. It's a club event that gets a lot of members involved in different things they might not otherwise know much about. An added plus is it helps keep people from having to pass up runs due to vehicle problems.
So far we have worked on cages, bumpers, nerfs, rocker nockers, tube fenders, drivelines, suspensions, steering, body work and a few other things.
