Ok researched online and wasted a trip to the local NC DMV (testing center).

I'm getting a '92 F700 cab truck and will be adding a ramp deck to haul my jeep.

* It has air over hydralic brakes. (not full air brakes)
* It will be well under 26k GVWR

Every thing i find says or references:
* Only required if over 26k GVWR (and/or towing 10k+)
* quote from the printed NC CDL manual: "CDL not required for personal use such as a recreational vehicle"
* Also mentions comercial use and for profit. (I am neither)

This leads me to think I'm good since this truck is 100% not commercial and will be privatly owned (by me), it will be tagged "weighted" and NOT tagged commercial.

For those who are in a similer boat.
Do you get stoped?
forced to stop at weight/check points ?
Any signage sugested or helpful to avoid confusion? (Not for hire etc..)

Also any good web forums for these size/type trucks ?

Thanks -mike

I have a CDL so I don't worry about it.

At work I drive an International that is rated at 25950, with air brakes. By Colorado law I still don't have to have a CDL since it is under 26k. That may not be true in NC though.

I was under the impression that if it has air brakes then you need an air brake endorsement. Maybe you should locate a DOT cop and as him.

You;ll still have to stop at weigh stations. Anything over 10,000lbs. (at least here in Iowa).

RV's are exempt from scales and no air brake is needed for them. I wouldn't think they would bother you if you aren't over weight. If you get stopped, just play dumb. I am truck driver and that has gotten me outta tickets before.
