: FSJ Trail Rigs
tjosha 03-29-2002, 08:12 AM I'm interested in specs and or pics of trail Cherokees and Wagoneers. Not really interested in daily drivers, just hard core trail rigs. I'm already aware of the SOA and rear shackle flip. but what else have you found that works?
BTW, already did the search.
Thanks,
Tim

WillyPete 03-30-2002, 02:40 PM that green thing looks like it could've been a cherokee in a past life :flipoff2:
here are some tentative plans for my cherokee... 1979 WT chief S
it's gettin built for mud mostly and some nice trails
SOA, shackle inversion rear, stock springs or J10 springs
front 60, pass drop
rear 14 bolt, D60, or D70, depending on what i can find
454 or 460 (mmmm big block)
sm465, t18a, or t400 (again, depending on what i can find)
np205, d300, or d20; all dependant on what's available
i'm hoping to find a semi-running 1 or 3/4 ton fullsize pickup and gank the drivetrain from it.
tires are probly gonna be 38x11x15 boggers or 15/38-16.5 ground hawgs. the hawgs are hella skinnier than they are advertised, and the boggers can technically be run on dana 44s, just not with a big block up front.
naturally, i'd prefer a 454/sm465/np205/60-14 bolt setup, but i'll just have to see what i can find
fenders are going to be trimmed out to the wheelwell; rear windows are going to be removed and replaced with mesh; tailgate will either be removed or replaced (rust goblins)
tjosha 03-30-2002, 06:33 PM That's pretty close to where I'm starting from -- '79 WT Cherokee Chief. It has a 360/Turbo 400/QT setup right now. I've browsed over at IFSJA. Seems like most of the posters are talking about DD or mild trail rigs. There's certainly nothing wrong with that, I'm just looking for a little more extreme. When I'm done, I want to be able to run Tellico/ Monteagle with my built CJ/YJ friends. I just want all the info possible.
Tim
big4294x4 03-30-2002, 07:36 PM That green thing is Peter Ruby's rig. It started out as a Cherokee, and I believe it still has a little of the frame left somewhere in amongst all that tubing. If you look above his name in the "members rigs" section, you can check out a saner version of the Cherokee as Andrew Dobosh's rig. It works pretty well. And is pretty damn beefy. Mine is in their too, but I am embarassed to say which one it is.
90WAG 03-31-2002, 05:12 AM I think the green thing is pretty damn sweet! I'll take function over pretty paint anyday.

90WAG 04-01-2002, 05:17 AM Uhhh Tigger, I think we're saying the same thing:flipoff2: BTW I think R-B's rig is real nice as well, but I'd take take the one above over R-B's in a heartbeat.:D

are you saying my mud brown paintjob I did on my rig a few weeks ago was a waste of time? dammit.....:flipoff2:
tjosha 04-02-2002, 11:00 AM That Wild FSJ page was exactly what I was looking for, Thanks.
Tim
High5 04-02-2002, 05:26 PM peter ruby's rig above is sweet. i have seen it a couple of times in person and it is definatly built to get it! tigger 4x if yours works half as good as his you will have a good rig. that thing has had the sheite wheeled out of it for quite a few years so excuse him if it is alittle beat. maybe if it was a poser rig it would look a bit nicer.
tigger4x 04-02-2002, 06:53 PM HIGH5 ... I hope my :jeep: is gonna GET IT! Seeing the rigs on WILD FSJs gives me hope anyway.:D Ruby's rig sure gets it. I just haven't gotten into a fully hacked rig ... yet. It could happen maybe. Lets see some more sweet rigs!!

yeah his rig did not start out as fully hacked but after years of trail abuse and modifications it ended up that way. i like seing you guys build "different" rigs. it is amazing to see what people come up with.
Savage 04-03-2002, 12:33 AM Hmmm, so what would you guys say for a '78 Chief S 2 door for $2000? It was someone's daily driver and seems to be in good running condition.

That depends on the rig itself. Most in this area can be had for under $1200. Since you live in Cali, I'm guessing that it doesn't have a rust problem. Here in the Midwest, it's hard to get one new from the dealer without rust.
IT just depends on what your willing to give. I sold my '82 Scrambler last night to buy a '79 Chief that is going extreme. The Scrambler is a different rig. But for what I want to do, I'm not hacking up one when there bringing very good money right now.
Good luck.
