: Hinged Axle Mount pics
mudlite 03-29-2002, 11:42 AM I have been searching for some good pics of Hinged axle mounts. Something used on a 1/4 eliptic or full leaf rig. I want to relieve some stress on my leaf pack, and since my rear axle is out, its a good a time as any to do it.
Not sure what the best way is , without adding too much height to my rear end. I have seen something on a Bronco PAge , but can't find it.
Any ideas?Pics?
yurtle 03-29-2002, 11:49 AM It's all in the search terms....
Lots o' Pics - searched SPRING HINGE (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3758&highlight=spring+hinge)
Good luck! This is one of those sounds-neat-but-I-dont-wanna-be-first things.

SamuraiChris 03-29-2002, 02:21 PM Here's what's on the back of my 87 sami.
http://home.off-road.com/~reilly/springhinge.jpg
The rear suspension consists of stock sami springs w/ stock shackles on both ends, the rear mount hooked to a drop arm off the frame.
axle is located by 2 heimed lower links, and a heimed y-bar up top. Here's a link to the Sami Flexing on a 30* ramp (http://home.off-road.com/~reilly/samionramp.jpg)
Disregard the caliper and all that crap, I'm doing some work to the rear 3rd member so the hwole axle is torn apart
poppycock 03-29-2002, 06:25 PM how do like those drop bars on the trail? i wasn't feeling to sure about the ones i made for mine... took them off in favor of a conventional shackle. but they will make it flex like heck! also have you ever had a problem with those rod ends mounted to your axle? what size are they?
UZI 9mm 03-30-2002, 12:06 AM there was a really neat picture of a guy doing a buildup with a Sammi that had a pivoting front crossmember.
both the front spring shackle mounts attached to it in the "usual" way, but the centre of the lateral mount pivoted like that picture of the old military dodge truck Hooder posted in gen 4x4 a while back.
but i can't remember what the thread was about, or who's samurai....
:( sorry, mudbreath.... maybe someone else here (without alzheimer's) can remember?
sigh.:rasta:

I love the drop bars on the trail, the Flex is awesome. Only problem I ever had was ripped mount on upper end of Y-Bar. That's after sustaining three years of abuse, Reinforced it n it's been fine since. The 4-link does an excellent job of keeping the drop bars where they're supposed to be on the street. The zuk does 60 comfortably on the Interstate, only thing holding it back is the gearing and 1.3.
No problems whatsoever witht he rod ends, they are 3/4" as measured at the threads. All Spidertrax stuff.

I think you might be referring to mine...was it this pic?

It's on a crappy geocities site, so you may not be able to see the pic. Here's a link... (http://www.geocities.com/keyframer/zook/frontend/index.html)
Those are old pics, but you get the idea. Shackle reversal, pivot front-end, rediculously long buggy leaves. I'm close to completion, but no pics yet. I'm still finegelin' the engine...
UZI 9mm 04-01-2002, 08:27 PM YES! yay, that's it! totally cool-what a great job you're doing, man.
(thanks, dangerber, too:)
that would've bugged the hell outta me to have lost track of this project.:D  :smokin:

No problemo :flipoff2:
That twisting , piviting, thing has some good fabrication, but I am not too sure about the geometry of the whole thing. could be damn scary.
ppillard 04-02-2002, 06:54 AM Thanks for the compliments! As soon as I get this last motor mount fabbed, I'll take some more pics that show all four tires, twist and whatnaught.
The geometry may be scary, but I'm implementing pins for on the road to tie it all down firmly in place. Also the shackle reversal config should dampen a lot of the road walk. But it is an expiriment, and with that comes a large "We'll just have to see..." label...:)
