Gentlemen, I would like to add a locker to my SUV. It is a fairly light rig with 104" wheel base. A few times a year I will be flat-towing my CJ3a to jamboree's and such. Is a Detroit to quirky? Would an Aussi locker be better? I'd like to keep it simple and not go with ARB, or an electric unit. What is your experience with Lockers in a tow rig. Oh, the chassis is '79 Jeep Wagoneer and should be up to the task. http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b89/willysworker/th_JEEPPHOTOS-50.jpg (http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b89/willysworker/JEEPPHOTOS-50.jpg)

Tow rig is the one time that a auto locke ris a bad idea? That doesn't have a d44 rear does it?> IF so, the its life will be short with a locker.

I second that.

Either open, limited slip, or selectable.

Do you still have the 2 piece 44 in the Wag? If so change it out for a Scout 44 then put the locker in. With the Scout 44 you get 1 piece axles and better brakes.

IMO, a full auto locker like a detroit will suck major ass on a tow rig. I would go with a LS or a selectable locker. Otherwise just carry a couple of extra axle shafts for your tow rig :flipoff2:

My 1 ton 1976 chevy camper special came with a locker....I have never noticed any quirks from it towing except when it snowed and I had no weight in the back.

Sure was fun though

Wag's have one piece rear shafts. You're thinking of CJ's.

Nope, the old Willy Wags had 2 piece axles.

he said his tow vehicle was a '79 wag.

It is one piece.

My truck as a limited slip in it. A REALLY tight limited slip.

Can't say as I've had any negative towing experiences with it. Actually it works so well, that when towing if I turn real sharp under lower power on dry pavement you can hear one of the rear tires chirping.

I think a detriot might be a little "quirky".

My uncle has had a No Spin (detroit) in his 68 C20 with 4.56s since it was new. He's towed all over hell and back with no issues. I've towed with it a couple of times myself, and aside from a little tire noise when turning sharp or turning while backing you wouldn't know it was there.
