: Who can machine 30 spline Spicer Hub internals to 35 spline.

If anyone has had any good luck with someone who does this, let me know.

This seems to be the path I am currently going to follow. Reason being I do not trust the Warn hubs and second I will not be using drive flanges at this time (but I will buy a set if someone has a spare set to sell). This seems to be the strongest locking hub solution available next to mfg a custom set of hubs or internals.

Thanks,

Someone has got to know who can do this.

I called CTM, Currie & ORU, they are either too busy or just don't do it.

Who's got the scoop?

I looked into this last summer, the only one I know of for sure is that ORU quoted me $75/each, I supply the part. I went with the Warns, I figured they have a warranty, and also they unlock real nicely; I was always fighting the Spicers.

Someone on here, maybe GOAT1, has or has access to a 35 spline broach. I think Donovan does too. If I recall right from reading this before you cannot rebroach a heat treated part.

I was able to locate someone who will do the broaching for the Spicer hubs. He is very reasonable and in Los Angeles.

So if anyone finds this thread by doing a search here's what you need to know.

$35 per broach. Five bucks for shipping.

Won't broaching them make them weaker due to less thickness of the sleeve? Or is broaching all Warn does with their 30-spline hubs to make them 35-spline?

I was thinking about that also. I only know what I've read and so far, the Warns seem to have a higher failure rate than the broached Spicers.

Pete,
Would you consider selling me your old Spicer hubs? Or at least one so I can have a spare.

A broached Spicer hub is still thicker than a Warn one, due to the design. With a spicer hub, the sliding part is the one that mates with the splines on the inside of the hub; there are only 2 pieces in that space. The Warns are a 3 piece design, the piece that mate with the hub splines and the piece that mate with the stub shaft splines are fixed, and there is a third piece in the middle that moves.

I think I'm gonna hang on to the Spicers for now, I only have one trip on the Warns so far.

Wait, now. My stock d60 hubs say Warn on the outside. Do they have Spicer internals, or broachable internals, or am I screwed?

Wow, interesting never thought about this. So what I understand from this thread is....I could send my Spicer 30 spline hubs(or just the piece that has splines) from my Dana 60 to Karl, and he can make them fit my new 35 spline outers???My spicers are in very good condition and work smoothly, but I dont want to shell out the $200+ for the Warns. I guess I will just carry flanges if a hub should ever break.
Am I understanding this correctly?

yes
go read some back issues of four or was it 4 wheeler where the Quagmire truck was used as the photo eye candy
they did the spicer hub 35 spline thing

Has anyone found anyone in the south east that does this?

from what i understand, the Spicer hubs are much stronger bceasue of the 3 v. 2 part reason Pete outlined.

I fight mine too, especailly to unlock them, but being that I've never had a problem with them (knock on wood) i'll probably get them broached once i go to 35 spline outters. I wish i could find just one Spicer hub for a spare, though:(

I'm sorry, I guess I didn't make myself clear. I'm looking for someone in the southeast that can broach my hubs.

We do it all the time and it seems to work great. The spicers are are a pain, but they are stout and Im running them front and rear never hurt one. Machine a little out and broach away!

Do you do the work yourself or send it out? I'm trying to find out if there is anyone closer to me to do it other than CA. If you can do it, can we work out a deal?

I use Mark Williams for my 35 spline broaching. They have done over 100 parts for me. The bore size for this is 1.415 to 1.418 and must be annealed to 20 to 22 rockwell scale "C". I have two sets of these on the shelf. steve differetial eng .ic.
