Just got some bad news from the shop looking into my sick 8874.

It seems the brake system is shot, and the electronics section is also wasted (rust..the cover was missing). It works fine, but its noisy...I have not had a load on it. The motor is ok.

I'm being quoted $600 to fix this thing....we know the winch is screwed, but I'm I being screwed too?

Yes you are, completely and utterly.

The following are retail prices for parts:

Complete solenoid pack $198.60
Solenoid $15 ea.
(only thing buying the whole pack gets you is the plastic cover, a metal bracket and some copper strips...a total waste IMHO)
Brake service kit $54

PLus, if you can change a spark plug, you can totally rebuild this beast yourself...it's very simple.

It is very easy to rebuild. I rebulit mine after I got it off a rig where it sat for about 10 yrs in a field. There was a site that I had that had a parts list but I just tried it from my favorites list and it no longer works, but I am sure it's easy enough to find

that's just warn's site it's a start anyway

A question for the folks looking at this. I didn't rebuild my brake when I did mine and think I may. How good should that brake work? How much wrap should occur after you stop winching, immediate or just a little?

I've got to agree with Bill, it's EASY ....do it yourself, spend the $56 for the brake kit and get the new solenoids.

Are you joking?? The winch isn't even worth that much. You may want to look into just buying a new winch, it sounds like yours is pretty ratty anyway. If it were me i'd rather spend some extra money to get a brand new winch that i know will work perfectly for a long time.
