i know this might be better suited in general, but i cant keep track of posts over there, and sometimes i dont trust the responce you get. anyway, i have the cruiser gutted and taken down the the frame from the firewall forward. im going to be shooting some black primer on there and i need to know a few things. first, do i need to take it down to the tub and NOTHING else? pretty much almost down to a frame off, and do it right, spraying the tub, then the doors hood fenders ect from all sides separatly? it seems this would be the only way to do it, or else all of my moving parts are going to show the old white paint underneath. plus i dont want the exterior black and the interior white. do i need to take all the glass out ? and also, where can i find WaxOyl or some other coating to prevent rust on the underside?
I guess im asking for advise here, i KNOW if i want a truely good job on this i need to take it down to every sigle part and spray them all separatly, and i want that kinda of quality, but i DONT want that kinda time:( what would/did you guys do?
thanks, Matt:skull:

Are you aiming for rust-postponement and a decent trail paint job, or show-quality?
With the specs listed in your signature, the truck sounds like a trail rig. Why spend all that time on a paint job you're just going to smash up anyway?
Just wondering...

My aim is to build a well thought out, versitile rig that can get it awn but is still usable for a DD. it wouldnt BE my sole DD but it will still be driven around town often, so it woulnt be trailered to the trail and back. i'm planning on having her for a LONG time and taking good care of her, so im trying to do right now and save myself hassels later. i already went through the entire interior of the tub and wire wheeled/ground/cut out the cancer and primered over it with rustoleum, so im trying to do the whole paint thing in one shebang. it woulnt be show quality though, just a few coats of flat black primer, no paint or clearcoat after that.

I have seen them done both ways. I take mine down to little boxes of bolts. It takes a while and you want to scream alot but I sorda think it is worth it. Well... then it costs huge $$ for all of the new bolts seals etc. uhhhh on second thought don't do it!
Really, if you have a lot of time and $$ go for it. I would not go through all of that to put all of the old dirty parts, seals, and grubby old bolts back in. I have usually just wished that I would have just painted and drove it by the time I am finished. As an example mine is nearing a 2 year just about done stage and my friend had his painted at the same shop and he is nearing the just about done stage in less than a month. You know what, when you paint over those old bolts they look OK. Allright, i'am going over to key his rig while it is still dark!:flipoff2:

If that is all you want to do, either remove the piece or mask it, depending on which one is faster. Other than time, it won't matter much. The 3M masking "gun" that runs the tape and paper together is a useful tool.

why rustoleum? you should really go with POR15 or something like it if you are going to bare metal AND don't feel like doing this again.

I did the interior of the tub with Rustoleum Heavy Rusted Metal Primer for one reason. I cant afford POR15. simple as that. this was just a preventative measure to stop the rust that was already there and prevent new rust from forming. Eventually [a year or two] the tub will be herculinered.
