I know here in PA we are supposed to have two per axle, and also they are suposed to cris cross to pull in opposite directions. I do not know what the laws are in your state. I put them on because I feel safer and I do not wnat to injure anyone!

use two per crossed, this way if any one fails your rig is still well secured.
or looking at it another way why risk wrecking stuff to save a few bucks?

is it a good idea to use chains? typically I take 2 short chains an use them in the front. I secure them them back up the rig till the are tight. then I hook up 1 long chain goine from the trialer, over axle, under 3rd to the other side then back over the axle and back to the trialer. I use 1 binder.

The trailer I borrow does not have typical tow hooks, so I use the frame in the front, and 1 stake pocket in the rear. Works good so far...

We use two straps per axle.
In BC straps are illegal. They want you to use chains

Don't know about anywhere else though

yes, the best way is probably to use 4 ratchet straps(5 ton rated) = 2 at each axle and pointing diagonally to eliminate side movement as well.

i'm a little too cautious maybe, so i put a fifth one from the rear axle straight back, in case i have to apply the brakes hard.

i carry the Frog on a 10 ton truck that i drive, which is taller then a trailer and therefore try to be very minded to securing the 3 ton Frog.

i do'nt like chains. they are more difficult to control & stretch, and they keep getting loose.
