: Upper Proving Grounds
Chris Geiger 03-29-2002, 11:02 PM On wed I ran upper proving ground in UT with a bunch of sammys. What a blast! I think it's the best trail in Moab. Well I am sitting here on the side of the road in UT eating dinner and thought I would post a couple of pics!
Chris Geiger 03-29-2002, 11:06 PM Here is a shot of my rig taking a different line. It's just a tuff spot no matter what you do!

It's a very tight trail I used the whole left side of my cage as a nerf bar to get in there. Any rig with rear body parts will have them rounded off if they try it.
The other 3 toyotas with me were not able to make it over the obstical and walked the rest of the trail. After I did about 1/2 the trail the Sammys showed up so I walked back to get some photos and watch their progress. After a few hours of watching there snail like movments I went back to my truck and finished the trail.
In addition to the four major obisticals there are also two downhill sections that are really steep. The first one was ok but the second one was nasty as hell, going down I was lifting rear tires and had a death grip on the wheel!
As far as damage I had none all week. The sammys also were getting through well and I did not see any failures but we only watched them get about 1/2 way. They were moving very slowly. One full size chevy with mog axles made it about 1/2 way but body damage tuned him around before he got to the hard part.
At the end there is a verticle climb that is harder than any other I have tried. It was as tall as some of the falls on surprise canyon and steeper than the last climb on upper Helldorado. There were two rear axles planted deep in the rock at the top making for good winch points.
There will be lots more photos later today when I get back to California this afternoon.
Chris Geiger 03-30-2002, 07:02 AM Unfortunately we did have some major damage later in the day. Bob Christianson rolled his bobbed 4Runner on Moab rim. The body is a total loss.

In spite of that it is still one of my favorite trails in Moab. Not gonzo hard, but very enjoyable.

Actually after looking at it more it looks like Devil's Crack. Not far enough up to be the z-turn. Looking forward to seeing more pics.
85TrailToy 03-30-2002, 04:37 PM   That first pic is Ree-Dic-U-Lus!! He looks to be perfectly vertical. How the hell do you get out of that??

Yep that line he was taking was a few inches left of where he needed to be. Made for a great photo! The cage rubbing the rock kept him from going over.

Yes, Walker and I pulled the truck forward about 20 feet up the trail before we put it back on it's wheels.
The roll happened just after Devil's Crack and well before the Z turn.

Some buddies of mine along with Evans helped drag it forward about 20 or so feet, then get it back on it's wheels. The scene of the incident was about 50 ft. past Devil's crack. You know, the long hump-like section where you go high or stay low, but not the middle. You've seen the result. It doesn't look like a potential place for a roll, and obviously catches some by surprise. Ouch!
Chris Geiger 03-30-2002, 05:39 PM Here we are pulling him up.
Seems like we had 5 winch lines on it when it went back over. It took about 2 hours to pull out the fender and remove the plugs. There was about 2 quarts of oil in the cylinders.

Chris Geiger 03-30-2002, 06:08 PM Time for a few pounds of bondo....
BenHanksRacing1 03-30-2002, 06:18 PM No matter how built rigs get, its good to know that Potato Salad can still lay the smackdown on a few. Keeps people humble. :D
Chris Geiger 03-30-2002, 06:57 PM Here is the right line up this obistical.... but a little more wheelbase is needed...
Skyetone 03-31-2002, 10:31 AM So did the driver of the runner stay on the trail afterwards? How did the roof get so beat up? Thats too bad on the bob job going by-by. Must of been a hellofa flop to trash it that bad, or was it from dragging it :D
Skyetone 03-31-2002, 10:32 AM oh and wheres the rubber side up pic of theat jeep? KILLER shot
randii 04-01-2002, 06:45 PM Scott endo'ed the Mantis on Proving Grounds, I think one waterfall back from the one at the top of this thread. Very little actual damage, but DAMN I can't imagine going endover off that wall!
I've walked PG, don't think I'll be driving it any time soon!

Yes he was, same rig. Kinda sad.
He allready has plans for a full tube rig using on the parts from the runner.
My trip report with lots of photos can be found at:

FYRMAN 04-02-2002, 08:25 AM I'm trying to remember the name of the guy that wheels that yellow Zuk. I'll probably butcher it, but is it Rick? or Scott? Casanova? Either way, that don't look like him in that pic. I remember that Zuk cause I was gonna copy the front grill and fenders for my little brothers Zuk, and he has that funky transverse Ford motor mounted in the sideways with the distributor poking through the firewall.
chris any pics of the bob on the 4 runner b4 it was rolled?
Buddy
