: 14 bolt and 60 questions for TJ.

I have several questions about putting a 14 bolt and a 60 under my TJ project.

My first question is about the width of a 14 bolt. I see from the 14 bolt bible that the 14 bolt comes in the common size of 67.5 for a SRW. I also read that the 14 bolt comes in a C&C version. Now from reading the 14 bolt bible I also see that the only difference between the SRW and the C&C version is the C&C version has a DRW hub. Ok now the questions... Is a DRW hub the only part needed to convert a SRW to a C&C version of the 14 bolt and will a disc setup work on a SRW converted to a C&C 63.5 inch WMS to WMS 14 bolt?

The next question ties the 14 bolt and a front dana 60 together. Should I even convert a 14 bolt SRW to a C&C 14 bolt because a 78-79 Ford Dana 60 is 69.25 wms to wms? I will need to cut the front axle for sure if I run a 63.5 wms to wms 14 bolt. OR, should I just run H2 wheels with their 5.5 inch backspace and keep the axles full width.

The other TJ I run 61 wms to wms Tera CRD 60's front and rear with wheels that have 3.5 inch backspace. So if I run full width and H2 wheels I will be about 2.5- 3.75 inches wider overall than my current TJ.

My last question is about pass or drive side drop high pinion Dana 60's. I know that the 78-79 Ford is a drive drop but I would prefer a pass prop Dana 60, BUT will a the driveshaft clear the starter on an 03 4 speed trans. What other, year and make, HP Dana 60 would be a good choice to run full width?

Thanks!!

Ford is the only stock high pinion 60. All drivers drop.

Well FORD it is than, well now I know why it's so expensive for a 78=79 ford junkyard axle.

Matt, you dont NEED the 78-79, the only difference between the 78-79 and the 86+ is the length of the short side tube, about 3" shorter on the 86+.

Are you going to be running, coils, coilovers, airshocks?

All kingpin Hp60s have the same wms (not sure about newer 60s). For 78-79, the pumpkin is offset 3" to the driver side more than 86+, like said above. Not to mention that 78-79 have tapered down inner shafts.

I used 79 HP60 for my TJ and cut the driver side by 2.75" to use an off-the-shelf spicer inner, but I'm still stuck with the long side being tapered down, go with an 86+ kingpin if you can.

I have a set of SAW 2.0 coilovers, for the front and fox 2.0 airshocks for the back. If I go with a 86+ kingpin ford will I have driveshaft issues with the driveshaft and an auto trans? Will the pumpkin offfset work for a TJ?? It looks like it has the same room as my other TJ and I run a full size driveshaft from highangledriveline.com...

The 78-79 Ford HP 60's are really desirable for YJ guys because they are almost a bolt-in. Since you aren't running leaf springs, the '86 to '91 HP 60 will work just fine. For the rear, just buy a SRW 67" wide 14-bolt from the junkyard for $100. Having the front about 2" wider than the rear is desirable.

Why H2 Wheels Over H1

Yes all you need is the hubs to convert a srw 14 bolt to 63wms., And if you look in the forsale section, I just happen to have a set of C&C hubs for sale. Much easier then storing a whole axle untill you get ready todo it.

I went with a 1986 HP Ford Dana 60 and a 14 bolt 67.5 wms to wms. Didn't realize how many brackets need to be cut off the 60.

Why H1 over H2 wheels?

The inside the 14 bolt the case has a bit of rust under under the diff oil. The gears look good but I am thinking about taking the 14 bolt apart and blasting the inside...

What should I be aware of if I media blast the inside of the case?

I have heard about people having problems with Breaking the Aluminum H2 wheels...

H1 steel wheels will need to be re centered because the backspacing is too much and puts the wheel in contact with the tierod.../ or you could use wheel spacers...yuk!

I went with steel and had them re-centered...
