Well, I made it home with a few new trail trophies and a few more friends. I just have to say that running the 'Con for the first time with a bunch of zuks was awsome. The trail was much rougher than I expected and the zuk faired well with minor damage. I did miss some Santa Rosa boyz(poppy, scwafish, tusker????) Did you get lost???

I did see a tan convertible with stripes on the backside of the lil sluice as I was pulling out on Saturday. Since I was tagging behind a few others I didn't get to stop and see who it was.
If you didn't see the other post, I have pics posted at http://members.home.net/mmartinez

I bet it made you think you have a lot of work to do on your rig huh. Last big run I went on it made me feel like I had work to do. Anyone in for the big jam at the Hammers? Frostoberfest should be awsome!!! Any takers?

The tan rig was me and scwafish. Sorry I missed you guys, but my wife broke three toes just before we were going to leave so I was delayed . We didn't get in there until noon on Saturday, just when everyone else was leaving. I did get to talk to a few folks, but missed you guys. Oh well, there is always next year.
Hey Marvin, how is your brother doing on his rig? In answer to his question, you do not have to redrill the front perches and relocate the front axle with his set up (like you do on the rear). He was scaring me the other night with his welding story . I hope he got those front missing links re-done. Tell him he can call me tonight if he still has questions.
Zuk88, I have your steering rag joint. We will hookup again someday.

Let me ask the what the final word is for the Hammers, I know that it's still in the month of October and it's at Johnson Valley. As far as the dates, I've heard a few so I ask some questions. I also thought It would be cool to wheel with some Zuk's, the Carnage on the Con was fun but there was only 2 Zuks in the whole bunch. As a matter of fact I only had the chance to wheel with the guy formerly know as Rokzuki, and that was only on the way to the box.

I didn't leave until Sunday morning (8:AM)! Where did you Camp?? I was just above Glenn on the granite slab.

YES!! I'll start the tear down soon. My next mods are:
1. Remove and toss the crappy Calmini shackle reverse(does not belong on the rocks at all)
2. Buy Trail Toughs new YJ missing link front end kit
3. Add pumkin caps and/or axle trusses
4. front locker
5. 2" backspaced wheels
6. on-board air(mine burned up on the second tire at the Dam, Big thanks goes out to WAZUKS for airin' me up)
7. Did I mention a front locker?
8. Power steering or knuckle over steering
9. 32" BFG mud T/As
and last but not least a f*&%in' front locker!!! I had to pull the seat cover out of my ass more than once on this ride.

Ever thought about doing the Toyota SOA? Sounds like you haven't spent too much on you axles now to start over on some Toy's. Suzuki axles will always be Suzuki axles, get out of them before you really spend money. You'll be happier with the a stronger running gear in the long run. Just my .02

This thought is the biggest thing that is keeping me from doing anything to my stock axles. I just haven't decided what to do just yet, so they are remaining open with stock gears.
I may upgrade to the Toy axles and will probably go spring over at the same time. The only thing I will have to have redone is put to put some adapters on my driveshafts that I picked up from Asian Auto.
I was pretty surprised and happy with how the zuk performed up there with YJ's and 31's still being spring under and opened front and rear.

The only reason that I would go 44's over Toy's is the width, if you plan on sticking with the full width I'd do it. If not I'd go with the Toy set up, my reasons;
keep it as light as possible
Toy third member (there is only one)
parts are cheap and readily avalible
the brake lines even hook up
all steel housing
all pro hy-steer arms
on the trail every other rig is a toyota, parts
Birs are easy to change
more ground clearence than a 44
Bla,Bla,Bla
there is a school of thought behind the 44 vs. Toy swap
who knows these are some of my reasons

Well,... I have to say that I saw some zuk axles take some serious beatings on the trail and I was amazed that I didn't see more breakage. I'm going to set up a set of zuk axles instead of toys or 44's for a "Suzuki puriest" kind of reason. I want to keep her all zuk. I like the narrow with of the axles and the ground clearence they give over 44's and toys. Gears and lockers are cheap and so are replacement axles. I don't hammer my rig , I like to think I finess my way through the trail. I know I'll run the risk of breaking more often with 32" tires, but if I wanted Toyota parts I would have built a Toyota, if I wanted 44s I would have built a Jeep. I don't mean any disrespect to any one not running stock axles,ect... I just would like to see how far I can go and still keep her all Suzuki. Just my .02

Thats funny you say this. I drive a toyota right now and I am changing over to a D44 front and 12 bolt rear. The main reason is that I want to go 62" wide. My next project is going to be a sammy. What is the axle width of the zook? I know that I would want to go a little wider than a stock sammy.

I'm not even sure about the stock width, never even messed with the stock stuff. As for the 44's, width is the only reason that I would go that direction.

I put an 86 toy rear and toy/d44 hybrid on the front and its pretty wide for a zuk, but way less wide than a fullsize setup. I think its gonna work out sweet.
Zuk88 you will change your mind later. I had Suzuki axle and they suck. I have broke every axle on the Sami. Toyota is alot better.

So far the Toyota axles have help up to everything I can dish out. I also run the All-Pro Hy-Steer arms with 3/4 hiems and 1" .250 wall tie rod and drag link. To this point the only problem I have had is that my gear oil spills out when the Suzuki is on it side, I think I have a bad seal at the shifter on the tranny. 88, I hate to say it, but I think you'll be way ahead in the long run by going toy or 44s. Even a cj 30 front would be better than the zuk stuff. I was like you for a year or so, PITA. Spend so much time and $ beefing the weak links of the axles, not enough time wheeling...Mike

[b]Well, there are a few: Toy axle is about 8" narrower. A Toyota front axle is 58" wide, versus 67" for most Fullwidth gear.
They're a hell of a lot lighter
Two words... Electric Locker
The differential pulls out with about 10 minutes worth of work.
They're all flat-top knuckles (Hy-Steer, anyone?)
Changing Birfield joints on the trail is fun. Really.
And finally... FJ-80 High-Pinion 3rd member(see below) I would think that you all would want to run this differential in a Samurai - it's even reverse-cut for the front. I have yet to see a mention of any Sammy owner running these. Why?

Mark, He doesn't need brakelines that are very log. 16" or so is more than enough. He might as well get 20-inchers though in my opinion. If he is like the rest of us, he will be sprung-over with 35's on Toyota or Dana 44 axles in a few years and then he would need the extra length. I recently ordered a set from "Wheeler's off-road". They seemed to be the cheapest for brake lines.

I know I will get crap with this one, but... I feel u-joints are stronger then the birfs.
Since a sammy is light, the toy axles with birfs should not be a problem.
I know I would want to go wider then the sammy axles. I asked this question earlier, but no one answered, what is the width on the sammy axles? or how much wider is the toy axles then the sammy, if at all?
