Dear Pirate 4x4,

My friend tells me that I am better off with with limited slip diffs in my 40 because I have so much horsepower, a short wheelbase and light weight. I told him that I would prefer ARBs but he is adamant that a pair of shimmed 80 series LSDs will be better. I am so confused because I have always thought that ARBs were the ultimate diffs for offroad capability. What should I do? What should I tell my friend?

Confused,
Canberra

what do you think this is, ann landers? jk:p

i always thought arb's would be better, but if you have a lot of horsepower, i would check around before putting an arb in the front (birfield breakage).

but then again, i dont know how much horsepower we are talking about here.....

light weight.

Dear Confused,

First tell your friend to put the crack pipe down. Then inform him that an FJ-40 can in no way be considered light:eek: Many people here run lockers without any problems, go get the ARB's and feel confident:D

Uh, could you give an idea of how much horse power, even a few of us yanks have a clue about Holden's. :D

Also what type of driving do YOU do?

dear confused,
the size of your member and amount of power behind it has little to do with breakage when off roading. i have seen small gutless men break birfs all day long.
i think your answer lies in finesse' thats right, caress her, make love to the terrain and she'll be yours for a long time.

what i meant to say was, get lockers if you require total traction, but take it easy on the go-pedal and you will be less prone to breakage.

Thanks everyone.

My friend likes to go in hard from the start, and usually blows early. Power is his answer to everything. I prefer to ease it in at a carefully selected angle. Me and my Cruiser haven't had any bust-ups yet.

I didn't mention that the 80 series lockers were free. So I will be going with them, but eventually I will put an ARB in the rear.

I have a Chev donk. Holdens are crap. I estimate it's output to be in the order of 200HP - which is not really that much is it?

I drive over a wide variety of surfaces. Mud, rock, sand, rivers, and filthy mixtures of them all. Not a daily driver, but road registered.

Ummm, when you're done with the 80 series lockers, let me have them :D I took off a rear ARB to run factory lockers (cable)

Sorry Dave, I meant 80 series LSDs. I would rather have a cable too, but they are as rare as hens teeth.

I think the birf's hold up alot better WITH an ARB.
I would tell your freind to: flipoff2: off.
P.S. does he have an arb in front of his???

200 hp = so much horsepower? Since the ls are free I'd go with them and see if you like 'em. My choice is to Detroit or ARB the rear and ARB the front.

Go with the ARBs. It's not the horsepower but the nut behind the wheel. Been running them a while with a well built chevy 383, 425+ lbs of torque, both front and rear, and everything is still alive.

IMO --run what comes out the box -- mines got all the "factory" ARB hardware. Also, if you decide to get the ARBs, lubricate the O-ring prior to install - this will help prevent many of the internal leakage problems with the ARBs.

Good luck!

200 isnt much terry cockayne's famous (in oz at least) red fj40 runs upwards of 400, and has ARBs front and rear, my truck has around 100kw but its only a diesel, although i have 800NM of torque, yeah im bragging and it was dyno'ed on thursday, oh and its trubocharged (VERY running up to 17psi) its had a cam grind and 40 thou overs, its also had the fuel shimmed (just a fraction) ;) it actually blows fuel when i tromp it, lots and lots of black smoke!!! :smokin: LOTS AND LOTS, almost lights on job, (for the cars behind) if i really give it some!! and some other stuff, stroked and ported and timing and just little fiddly things that progly weren't all that worthwhile...

i run ARBs and LOVE it, you CAN NOT get any better traction solution than a cable or airlocker IMO, with twin lockers its much easier to drive to a rollover point, than with opens, but it also make short work of stuff that you previously would have had several attmepts, big revs and lots of breakage!!!

DO the ARBs, i got no horsepower but short/high and think lockers should be the first mod.

what does the L in LSD stand for?
LIMITED,
do the LSDs and your car will be limited............big horsepower?
its all about gearing!!!:rasta:
