I have a 98 xj, 3 in. lift running 31s and stock gears. if i went to 4.10 or 4.56 gears, would this improve my gas mileage at all? i feel like i got way better gas mileage on my 96 xj running 35s and 4.88s.

Quick and dirty answer, yes, go with 4.10's.
I have a '97 with a 3 inch and 31, I get between 17.4 and 17.6 in the city and around 21.5 on the highway. Mileage is compenated since the speedo is off a little, if you go off of the odometer the numbers will apear better than this.
