Can I swap the head on a york (by turning it 180*) so its discharge is on top?

Thanks

I don't think you can...It looks symetrical so it could physically be done, but I don't think it makes any difference in intake and discharge ports. What difference does a few inches make? Can't you just mount a remote intake filter?
Here's some good pics of one disassembled http://www.rockcrawler.com/techreports/york_mod/index.asp maybe that will help?

SUCTION NEEDS TO BE ON TOP!

FROM PAGE 4
TRUE UNIVERSAL MOUNT — Can be installed and
operated in any position from horizontal left to horizontal
right as received. No field adjustments are necessary.
If the compressor is mounted horizontally, the suction
side should be on top.

i couldnt remember which one needed to be on top. Either way, I was curious about flipping/roatating or otherwise changing the suction&discharge vent locations to make it more feasable to mount it on its side in my engine bay. I have usually seen them with the head on the passenger side of the crank- or vertically as it is on my 258. I was wondering about laying it with the head on the drivers side as i had considered in my Dodge. I do not know which is the discharge port. I guess it all hinges on that. :D

Thanks

Block off one of the ports with your thumb and turn the pulley. You will be able to figure out which port is which.

Ah...that makes more sense now. The York can be mounted vertically or horizontally as long as the suction is on top (as pointed out by CB87YJ) http://www.kilbyenterprises.com/york-manual/pdf/8.pdf I thought that most Yorks suction was on the top right (looking at the pulley) but after sifting through several York OBA writeups it seem that about half are on the right side and half are on the left, it must depend on what application they were removed from (some Ford and AMC were mounted horizontally) so maybe it is as simple as removing the head and rotating 180* or maybe swapping the valves in the head. What the hell, pull the head off and take a look...besides you were going to do that oil hole mod anyway, right?
