I'm currently running the 37x12.5-15 MTR and have been very happy with them. about 90% of my wheelin is in the midwest and the MTR has done really well even with the wet terrain we always have.
but, here's my question....... I would like my next set to be a 38x12.5-15 (or possibly stay with a 37 again). the little extra size would be nice, but it all depends. does the 38" TSL or SX hook up better than the MTR on the rocks?
I know they do better in muddy situations (which would help sometimes), but I don't want to sacrifice dry traction (the MTRs are even siped to open the lugs more).
it looks like a 37" Irok, 37" MTR, 38" TSL or 38" SX would be what I'm looking at. any opinions on how they hook up compared to others? I've done a ton of reading through searches, but it's always Irok vs SX for the most part.
I don't have beadlocks yet (so that may push me away from the TSL and bead retention) and they are going on a dual locked 4500lb rig.
it's a DD for now, but the offroad capability is more important to me.
TIA :smokin:

If you're driving it on the street then the mtrs will outlast the others you listed.

Have you considered BFG Krawlers? I dont really know how long they last on the street but the Blue Label (harder compound) might be worth looking into considering that the Red Laberl (Competition Compound) are pretty much the shit.
PS Where in Chicago are you?

Hey Steve,
It all depends on what kind of life you want out of the new set. You do a ton of road miles so the IROKs would be out from a longevity standpoint. The SXs wouldn't be far behind in terms of long life (read short). I'd say stick with the MTRs or get a tow rig and trailer:flipoff2:

If it's not broken, don't fix it. :D It's very hard to beat a MTR. I don't like my MTRs for the mud or clay I sometimes see here in Cali, but just about any tire will bog down with mud unless you have SS Boggers. Although you are in the Midwest with lots of mud. I'm in Cali and most everyone runs MTRs on the rock crawling trails and on the street. Only consider bias ply tires if you tow your rig and you are getting beadlocks, because you will have to air them down to 4 psi or so for them too hook up. If you can do that then get Boggers and let those lugs spin. SS options are TSL radials or Irok radials especially if you dd your rig and you don't have beadlocks.

I live in Utah and we wheel in the rocks alot. The SX is probably the toughest rock tire out there that most of us can afford. Note: The Krawler is VERY tough but out of most guy's budget price wise. If you run the SX on the road however flat spotting can be an issue. Alot of the guys in our group run them however and they seem to work well.
Like you I run the MT\R and love it. I drive on the road some so the radial is nice. The MT\R has also won quite a few rock crawl comps so it should suit you needs there. I have run them on most of the trails in Moab ( only 175 mile drive for me although I do trailor to the motel) with them as well as XL Canyon and lot's of other un named trails with no complaints. If they have worked for you so far stick with them I just can't see you being sorry.
My opinion------ for what it's worth.

thanks for the honest replies from everyone. I appreciate it. looks like I'll have to make up my mind to stick with the MTR or go 38" TSL. I have some time, the MTRs still have about 1/2 the tread left, just doing some homework :smokin:
and Mike, we'll talk more when we're on the trail! :flipoff2:
